LESSON NO.

53:
INVESTIGATING THE PROPERTIES
OF LIGHT
SCIENCE IDEAS:
1. Just as heat and sound travel, light travels
too. Light travels in a straight line.
Sometimes light bounces back to the
direction of its source. We call it reflection.
2. Some objects that reflect light.

Mirror Shiny Metals Water

3. Light travels in a
straight line but when
it passes from one
material into a second
material like mirror
or water, the light path
will either be bent or reflected back.
4. Light reflects the
same way off the mirror.

5. Light bounces off

at the same angle
that it struck the mirror.
6. Light bends also as
it passes from some
objects when viewed
at an angle.
Example: The pencil
appeared to be broken
as it passes from air to the glass of water.
7. Light travels
slower in the
water and
it travels faster
in the air.

8. As the light changes

speed, it changes
direction resulting
in what appears to
be bending. The
bending of light
is called refraction.
9. A rainbow is formed when the light of the
sun passes through the raindrops. Rainbow
is a result of sunlight breaking into different
colors. That is why we often see a rainbow
after it rained. As the light bends,it separates
into different colors of red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, indigo and violet ( ROYGBIV ).
10. The letters of the AMBULANCE
are printed backwards
and are reversed
in sequence that
they appear readable
when seen in a
rear-view mirror.
Write TRUE if the statement is correct and
FALSE if it is not.
1. Light can be reflected if it is directed towards
a mirror.
2. Refraction is the bouncing back of light that
strikes a clear surface.
3. When somebody faces a mirror, his
reflection can be seen in a reversed manner.
4. Lights travels faster in air than in water.
5. The speed of light remains the same even if
it travels from one material to another.
