This document describes a magnet exploration activity using a plastic bottle, pipe cleaners, scissors, a magnetic wand, and tape. Children are instructed to cut pipe cleaners into 1-inch pieces and put them into a bottle. Then they use a magnetic wand to move the pipe cleaners around inside the sealed bottle. The activity promotes skills like initiative, problem solving, gross and fine motor skills, and understanding of concepts like geometry.

Different colored pipe cleaners (they choose) Scissors Magnetic wand Tape (to keep lid closed)
Directions
1. Show the child the objects.
2. Let them experiment with materials/guess what they are going to do. 3. Let the child choose the color pipe cleaners they want. 4. Have the parent cut them up (pieces the size of 1 inch) 5. Have the child put them in the water bottle. 6. Close the bottle and put tape around it. 7. Have the child move the magnet all around the bottle.
Possible COR Anecdotes:
Level 1: U. Measurement (fills bottle with pipe cleaners)
EE. Tools and Technology (uses magnet wand) A. Initiative and Planning (moves & reaches desired object) B. Problem Solving with Materials (tries to put pipe cleaners in even after they fall out) Level 2: C. Reflection (child continues to put magnet on bottle/hands to parent has her/him do it) A. Initiative and Planning (says one/two words about plan) D. Building Relationships with Adults (explores & shows B. Problem Solving with Materials (asks for help) parent) C. Reflection (returns after leaving to the activity) I. Gross Motor Skills (walks over to activity) J. Fine Motor Skills (picks up pipe cleaner, puts it in the F Building Relationships with Other Children (works bottle) alongside another child) L Speaking (say/signs a single word to refer to L Speaking (says 2 or 3 words about activity) object/person/action) M. Listening & Comprehension (responds verbally to statement M. Listening & Comprehension (puts pipe cleaner into bottle or question) as asked) S. Numbers & Counting (can count the pipe cleaners as they O. Alphabet Knowledge (extension: make remaining pipe put them in the bottle) cleaners into letters) T. Geometry (tell child to put the pipe cleaner IN the bottle, put S. Number and Counting (asks for more) the lid ON the bottle) T. Geometry (fits pipe cleaners into bottle) CC. Experimenting (investigates a material)
