The painting of Fernando Amorsolo

“Planting rice”
Quickly scan the photo. What particular
features stick out or what did you notice
first?

 The thing that catches my attention was those

Filipino farmers wearing their hats known as salakot.
To include, those Filipino farmers are not just male but
there is also women. To add up the combination of
colors that was used were really lively, it seems like
the emotion of the artist painting this portrayed how
lively the farmers is and the artist is able to passed his
emotion to the onlookers.

Painted by whom?

 Fernando Amorsolo painted a peaceful

painting such as planting rice to get back to his
usual expression using the light technique of
painting.
Where is it from?

 Mayon is a celebrated symbol of our country ,

and its presence in Amorsolo's painting
emphasizes his wish to represent the spirit of
our nation on canvas. As of now, 'Planting Rice
with Mayon Volcano' is in the collection of the
Metropolitan Museum of Manila.
When is it from?

 The painting of Fernando Amorsolo which entitled

Planting rice is created in 1947. It is inspired by the
rice field in town of San Vicente, Camarines Norte. It
reflects the arrival of the Americans in the Philippines
and the idealism of the artist to the Philippine society.
The painting reflected the people's desire to escape
from a complicated reality into simplicity (Stancheva ,
2017).
What was happening at the time in history this
photo was taken?

 It was during this time that amorsolo received his

first art instruction from Don fabian .the familys he
came of age during a transition time, during the
period of fernando amorsolo he was develop the use
of light .and lastly ,during a tumultuous and violent
time in the philippines and experienced much such as
a family tragedy during the war when amorsolo
younger half brother.
Why was it created?

 It was an ideal picture of provincial life like most of his paintings. The particular
genre that was used is realism. He painted the details as to how it might look like
in real life. His work titled “Rice PLanting” which was made in 1922 was one of his
most famous works. This was when the Philippines was under the American
colonial rule and it is impressive that Amorsolo consistently painted pictures
reflecting the true Filipino soul despite the colonization. Although, critics have
been claiming that Amorsolo did these to serve as souvenirs to the Americans not
with standing the fact that “Rice planting” became so popular that time that it
was used in calendars, brochures etc.

Critics were also claiming that Amorsolo’s works have no deep meanings. There is
nothing to appreciate aside from how it was made. But, still Amorsolo was the
proponent artist to promote the impression of the Filipino identity on canvass.
What did you find out from the document
that you might not learn anywhere else?

 According to the article that I read, which talks about Fernando

Amorsolo’s work, I learned that Fernando Amorsolo used light and
pastel colors in the painting to produce a feeling of calm and peace
since the setting was in a rice field where farmers are in the rice
field. Backlightning was also used in this painting where the figures
are outlined against a characteristic glow. The artwork was also
used in calendars and brochures when the American colonial rules
our country. When you just look at the painting I think you will not
give a second glance at it. But as I look on it, ai noticed that not
only male farmers but there are also female farmers in the painting
in which Amorsolo highlighted. He may not put the detailed faces
and the salakot was in their head, i noticed the different gender
because of their clothes.
What other documents or historical evidence
are you going to use to help you understand
the event or topic?

internet and some videos on youtube like “Artwork by
