Specific Learning Objectives:

Lesson Simple collision Theory
1.Explain the effect of concentration, temperature, and particle size on the rate of reaction.
2.Define catalyst and describe how it affects reaction rate.
1
3. Recognize the role played by catalysts and inhibitor in our everyday lives.

Pre-Assessment
Choose the letter of the best answer. Write your answer before each number

Have you noticed that when you mix coffee powder in cold water, it does not mix properly? Even if you want to
drink cold coffee, you mix the coffee first in hot water to dissolve it before putting ice. What do you think is the
reason for that? Chemical reactions happen all around us every day. “There are reactions when you take
medications, light a match, and take a breath”. Just like any other types of measurement, such as length,
mass, and time, rate of reaction is playing a major role in our daily life.

Factors that affect the rates of reaction based on the Collision Theory

The second factor that influences rate is temperature. The higher the temperature of the reaction, the
more quickly it will proceed at higher temperatures, the molecules are moving around more quickly;
this means that they will collide with each other with more energy, and it’s more likely that they will

overcome the activation energy needed to start the reaction. It’s a general rule of thumb that a 10oC
increase in temperature will double the reaction rate.

Activity You and I Collide.

In this activity, student will act out as molecules inside a closed container. The
classroom will represent the volume of the container. The students will walk around the
room in a straight but random fashion. Allow the students to simulate how the
molecules will behave if
a. The temperature inside the container is increased
b. The temperature inside the container is decreased
c. The concentration of the molecules increased (addition of more students inside
the room)
d. The concentration of the molecules is decreased

Guide Questions You and I Collide.

1. How do molecules move when the temperature of the vessel is increased? Decreased?

2. How do molecules move when the temperature of the vessel is increased? Decreased?

Factors Affecting the Rate of Reaction

1. What happens when the energy of the molecules reaches the activation energy of a reaction?

2. What factors did you manipulate in order to increase the amount of products formed?

How To Speed Up A Chemical Reaction

1. Enumerate the factors that can speed up a chemical reaction.

2. How does having a dance date relate to a chemical reaction?

DEEPEN

According to the collision theory, the following criteria must be met in order for a chemical reaction to occur:

1. Molecules must collide with sufficient energy, known as the activation energy, so that chemical bonds can
break.

2. Molecules must collide with the proper orientation.

3. A collision that meets these two criteria, and that results in a chemical reaction, is known as a successful
collision or an effective collision.

TRANSFER

List down activities or scenarios you experience that you can relate to Collision theory. Discuss
how these events relate to the topic.

a. reactant molecules collide less frequently
b. reactant molecules collide more frequently and with greater energy per collision
c. activation energy is lowered

2. The minimum amount of energy needed to start a reaction is called the

a. activation energy. b. energy of reaction.
c. entropy of reaction d. reaction mechanism energy

3. The rate of a reaction depends on __________

b. All colliding particles have the same amount of energy.
c. Only fast-moving particles collide with each other.
d. Reactions can happen if the colliding particles have enough energy.

5. A reaction was found to be zero order in A. Increasing the concentration of A by a factor of 3 will cause the
reaction rate to __________.
a. remain constant b. increase by a factor of 27
