Papers will be graded on the clarity of the thesis in response to a significant issue for analysis, the
development of the main point through a detailed close reading, the coherence of its structure, and
the mastery of formatting, grammar, and writing style.
Developing
ANALYSIS Lengthy summary and/or
paraphrase overshadows the
analysis, and/or the scope of
the analysis goes beyond
what is needed and
complicates the work; little to
no analysis of quotes or
textual evidence.
INTEGRATION OF TEXT None or one quote is
presented without an
introduction or smooth
integration; a large sum of
documentation errors which
impede comprehension.
DEVELOPMENT OF There is a weak or absent:
thesis (too broad and/or a

are unclear in introducing the
claim(s), the explanatory
commentary under-developed

organization of the argument
