Introduction
Whenever new piston rings are mounted, the cylinder liner must be honed. Normally a
light honing is sufficient. If the honing is done when the cylinder liner remains installed in
the engine block, the crankshaft under the cylinder liner being honed must be protected
by a plastic sheet or similar.
CAUTION:
Prevent honing debris must be prevented from entering the crankshaft or bearings and
falling into the oil sump of the engine.
NOTE:
The honing oil must be clean and of good quality to achieve good honing results. Take
care of proper flow of the honing oil during honing. It is important that the liners are
cleaned thoroughly after the honing as any remaining debris will cause rapid wear of
piston rings and liner.
ATTENTION:
The 80 grit honing stones should be used for about 20 strokes or until the polished areas
in the cylinder liner are removed. After that, the 400 grit honing stones should be used
for about 30 strokes to give the correct surface finish.
The pitch angle of the honing lines in the cross hatch pattern should be about 30°, see
Figure 1.

· Use honing oil as coolant. A light fuel oil of 2-15 cSt could also be used.
· Clean and dress honing stones if they are clogged up by honing debris, preferably
after every 10 strokes.
· After honing is completed, the liner bore must be carefully cleaned by using a suitable
brush, water (preferably hot) and soap or cleaning fluid. Alternatively, light fuel oil can
be used. Then dry with a cloth and lubricate with engine oil for corrosion protection.
The condition and cleanness of honing oil has big effect for the end result.

If the roughness measuring gauge cannot measure above mentioned units, the surface
parameters in Table 2 may be used.

NOTE:
Both grit 80 and grit 400 stones MUST be used after diamond stones, plateau honing
with only grit 400 after diamond stones leaves unfavourable flaking to the surface.

Stone pressure
Stone pressure is pneumatically controlled on the DGL machine and mechanically
controlled on the HON-S and HON-A machines. For improved precision on the
mechanically controlled heads, it is recommended to use a torque wrench with adapter.
Table 3 shows how settings are done for these three alternatives:
Vibrations can occur during the cylinder honing process. Such vibrations can create
unfavourable striping and scratches in the liner and should therefore be avoided.
Lowering the stone pressure will normally reduce the vibration level and may be
necessary especially when using new stones. The stone pressure can then be increased
step-wise as the stones and liner surface “run in”.
NOTE:
It is recommended to use exchange stone holders equipped with different grit stones
ready mounted to avoid cracking of ceramic stones and reduce time during switching of
stones.
Diamond stones get dull over time. The cutting performance of the diamond stone can
be restored by turning the stones up-side-down, thereby creating a fresh cutting surface.

For an installation with engines of several “Ref. type” the same tool can be used for all
