Mother Teresa foundation for olders

Project Plan For Old Age Home

Elderly are an integral part of a population of any country who owe respect and attention equally
like any other section. However, due to changing family structure and modernization, elderly
population is facing inevitable challenges to live their life respectfully. Loneliness, negligence
and less importance, illness due to ageing and against lack of treatment are the most of the
treacherous conditions which elderly are facing. Ageing in Bangladesh is exponentially
increasing due to the impressive gains that society has made in terms of increased life
expectancy. With the rise in elderly population, the demand for holistic care tends to grow. As of
2020, over 13 million people living in Bangladesh are aged over 60 which is 8% of the country's
total population. The proportion of older people is expected to double to 21.9% in 2050 with 36
million people aged over 60. This means that for every five Bangladeshis, one will be a senior
citizen. Under the social welfare ministry, there are six old-age homes in Dhaka, Sylhet,
Rajshahi, Bagerhat, Chattogram, and Barishal. Each can house only 50 persons at a time. So here
need more old age home with more capacity. It is important to understand the social aspects
concerning aged in the country as they go through the process of ageing. Changing lifestyle,
availability, accessibility and affordability of health care, increased life expectancy, rapid
urbanization and economic dependency have led to an emergence of varied problems for the
elderly in Bangladesh. And hence “Mother Teresa foundation” has identified these needs and to
provide the elderly with the required support, the organization is proposing to build an Old age
home for 100 elderly people at Noakhali. The total cost of the project is 10, 96,899/-

In the old age homes for old people where they are taken care. They are given food and place to
live. Those old people who are alone or don't have someone to take care can live in there.
Helpless people of above 60 years irrespective of race, cast and creed can be rehabilitated with

the full responsibility in the centre. All basic amenities like accommodation, foods, cloths,
medicines and other facilities are provided free of cost to the neglected, unable to earn livelihood
and helpless old peoples of above 60 years till their death in the centre. Necessary medical
facilities are also provided. There is required number of nurses to look after the elderly. The
centre may also have its own health care centre, where there are an MBBS doctor and several
compounders for treatment of the elderly. Necessary medicines are prescribed and provided free
of cost and ambulances are also available in case patients need to be transported to other medical
centres/hospitals. It can have a pathological laboratory and Ex-Ray machine for medical
diagnosis. The elderly will receive free medical check-up regularly at the medical centre.

With the increasing trend of nuclear families in the society and with fewer children in the family,
the care of older persons in the families gets increasingly difficult. Therefore, it is necessary to
safeguard the elderly people who are absolutely neglected, ill-treated and vulnerable. It could be
addressed by establishing a care giving unit especially for the elderly people that will dedicatedly
work on meeting their needs. “Mother Teresa foundation” is looking forward to set up such care
giving unit or commonly known as old age homes for 100 elderly people in the year 2021-22.
Although Mother Teresa foundation realizes that an elderly person deserves an attention from
their family but looking at the data it is found that the number of neglected elderly people is
rapidly increasing and there is a huge need of an intervention to address the problems that are
elderly people are facing at the moment.

Motivation

For the elderly & senior people this is very important issue because you need utmost medical
care & look after when you grow old whether you are in Bangladesh or anywhere in the world.
There are many reasons for looking for old age homes /retirement care homes in Bangladesh
such as migration or location of children due to their work / lack of time in youngsters / neglect /
family problems etc. The concept of the old age home has become quite familiar today, but often
for the wrong reasons. The idea seems to evoke a sigh of pity which is uncalled for. Firstly, it has
been ascertained by social surveys that there need not be any stigma attached to the residents of
old age homes and neither do they require our pity. Secondly, many parents of middleclass
families are neither neglected nor abandoned by their children.

Value Chain of Mother Teresa foundation

A value chain is a business model that describes the full range of activities needed to create a
product or service. For companies that produce goods, a value chain comprises the steps that
involve bringing a product from conception to distribution, and everything in between—such as
procuring raw materials, manufacturing functions, and marketing activities.

Components of a Value Chain

11
In his concept of a value chain, Porter splits a business's activities into two categories, "primary"
and "support," whose sample activities we list below.2 Specific activities in each category will
vary according to the industry.

A value chain is a step-by-step business model for transforming a product or service from idea to
reality. Value chains help increase a business's efficiency so the business can deliver the most
value for the least possible cost. The end goal of a value chain is to create a competitive
advantage for a company by increasing productivity while keeping costs reasonable.

Primary Activities

Primary activities consist of five components, and all are essential for adding value and creating
competitive advantage:

Inbound logistics include functions like receiving, warehousing, and managing inventory.

12
Operations include procedures for converting raw materials into a finished product. Outbound
logistics include activities to distribute a final product to a consumer. Marketing and sales
include strategies to enhance visibility and target appropriate customers—such as advertising,
promotion, and pricing. Service includes programs to maintain products and enhance the
consumer experience—like customer service, maintenance, repair, refund, and exchange.

Support Activities

The role of support activities is to help make the primary activities more efficient. When you
increase the efficiency of any of the four support activities, it benefits at least one of the five
primary activities. These support activities are generally denoted as overhead costs on a
company's income statement:

Procurement concerns how a company obtains raw materials. Technological development is used
at a firm's research and development (R&D) stage—like designing and developing
manufacturing techniques and automating processes. Human resources (HR) management
involves hiring and retaining employees who will fulfill the firm's business strategy and help
design, market, and sell the product. Infrastructure includes company systems and the
composition of its management team—such as planning, accounting, finance, and quality
control.

Future Plan for improvements:

 To construct a pucca building with good amenities, that can accommodate 100 persons.
 To improve the infrastructure to accommodate the inmates such as dining hall,
kitchen, lighting, fans, beds etc.
 Conduct periodic recreational activities to keep them in joy and happiness.
 Increase the medical facilities and routine checkups of the inmates.

Negative outcomes, if the project is not implemented:

13
Deprivation of nourishment: The poor helpless and destitute old aged will not get
adequate meal and nourishment and thereby, will suffer from malnutrition.

Deprivation of clothes: The poor helpless and destitute old aged will be deprived from
adequate clothing. They will suffer more in winter seasons.

Deprivation of health care: The poor helpless old aged and destitute old aged persons
will fail to receive health care for their illness. There will remain low awareness on
health and hygienic issues among them.

Poor emotional support and mental health: The poor helpless and destitute old aged persons
will be deprived of family care and tender love. Many of them have to be engaged in
adult economic activities. Therefore, many of the target old aged persons will suffer from
“Abandoned Old Aged Syndrome” which includes withdrawal from social activities, anxiety,
fear and uncertainty, sleep and eating disorders and physical ailments.

Poor social and spiritual development: Failing to gain spiritual messages and social
participation, The Old Aged persons may become frustrate and feel unhappy to live at home.
