VISION 2021 – World Class Health Care

A new branch (opened in 2006) of Imperial College London Diabetes Centre is situated in Zayed
Sports city in Abu Dhabi, next to Healthpoint. It has 70 medical and non-medical staff and
patients have access to specialists in diabetes treatment and other specialists including
cardiology. Healthpoint and ICLDC are health centers managed by Mubadala Healthcare, a
division of Abu Dhabi Government-owned investment and development company, Mubadala.
The Mubadala’s healthcare network began in 2006 and it contributes to Abu Dhabi’s strategic
goal of a world-class, sustainable health-care sector.
About 19.3% of the UAE’S population between the ages of 20-79 suffer from some sort of
diabetes. It is roughly estimated that at least one million people in UAE suffer from diabetes. In
2015, UAE was ranked at 13nth highest for prevalence of Diabetes. Medical conditions such as
comorbidities and obesity and hypertension and hypercholesteremic coexist with diabetes.
The number of medical patients is expected to double to 2.2 million by 2040

VISION 2021 – COMPETITIVE KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY

In 2015, UAE announced its mission to mars. It was named Amal or hope. It will send a
spacecraft to orbit Mars in the year 2021, to coincide with UAE’s 50th anniversary. The
spacecraft is designed by scientists and engineers at Dubai Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum
Space Center. They are building an orbiter to carry the instruments to build the first holistic
picture of Mar’s atmosphere. This is a result of the initiatives planned by Dubai’s sheikh,
The Hope Probe mission is more than just a mission to mars. It marks the beginning and a legacy
on the Earth on the part of UAE’S effort to build a space industry. The UAE is a member of
International Space Exploration Coordination Group. T It seeks to promote coordination in space
exploration. The UAE space Agency directs efforts in astronomy and aerospace.

ECONOMIC POLICY IN THE UAE

The UAE is a major trading hub in the Middle East. It is also the financial and business capital
for the region. The country is the wealthiest in the region with a GNI per capita rate of 75,300 $
in 2018. GNIS is the gross national income converted to international dollars using purchasing
power parity rates. Before the discover of oil in the 1950s, UAE’s economy was driven mainly
by nomadic farming, date palm cultivation, fishing, pearling and seafaring. Much of the modern
development in the UAE is due to its natural resources of oil and gas. The UAE has the third
largest reserves of the OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries).
Since the discovery of oil, the economy has been influenced mainly by the following sectors.
 Extraction of crude oil and natural gas
 Wholesale and retail trade
 Repair services
 Real estate
 Business services
 Construction
 Manufacturing
From 2016 to 2017, UAE’s GDP increased by 0.8%.
