Gold death mask is used by early inhabitants for the dead. The face of the
corpse was covered with delicately worked sheets of gold. It was cut out into two
pieces. The burial practice of covering the eyes, nose, and mouth with sheets of
gold came from the Southern Chinese and it is practiced by some group of
Filipinos.
It is believed that when the face of dead is covered with gold masks, evil spirits
cannot enter the body.
The gold death mask was found in a grave site in San Antonio, Oton, Iloilo and
dated from late 14th to the early 15th century.
