WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE
MOVEMENT

▫ Subservient to men & relied on


them
▫ Couldn’t own property
▫ Couldn’t vote
▫ Inequality in divorce
▫ inequality in education and
employment opportunities
▫ They wanted to be seen as equal
and full citizens of the United
States
CAUSES CONTINUED...

▫ World War One


▫ Men went off to war
▫ Women took their jobs
▫ Women also took new jobs
created from the war
▫ When the war ended they
were expected to go back
to being in the home

are life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness.”

SENECA FALLS

▫ 1st Women’s Rights Convention held


on July 19-20 of 1848.
▫ Local female Quakers organized the
convention.
▫ Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a big
influence on organizing the Seneca
Falls Convention.
▫ Declaration of Sentiments
15TH AMENDMENT

What is the 15th Amendment?


▫ Passed by Congress on February 26,
1869
▫ Ratified by on February 3rd, 1870.
▫ Granted the right to vote regardless
of race, color or “previous condition
of servitude.”

Why weren’t women included?


▫ Women were viewed as inferior to
men.
▫ Women were considered “child-like”
and incapable to vote responsibly.
THE DIVIDE?

▫ Due to the exclusion of women in the


15th amendment, a split between
women rights activists developed.
▫ Many activists argued whether to
support or oppose the amendment.
Oppose?
▫ Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
▫ Saw the new addition as offensive.
▫ Refused to support since the rights
of women weren’t alongside black
men.
Support?
▫ Lucy Stone
▫ Was disappointed that women were
excluded, but continued to support
the 15th amendment.
ORGANIZATIONS

▫ NAWASA -- National American Woman


Suffrage Association

▫ NWP -- National Woman’s Party


▫ Mainly under the leadership of Elizabeth
Stanton and Susan Anthony
Accomplishments

▫ Carrie Chapman Catt

▫ Most of their smaller accomplishments


were to bring awareness.

▫ 1920 - Women are granted the right to


vote through the 19th amendment.
The Opposition of
Women’s Suffrage.

Anti-suffrage activists.
▫ For a while, anti-suffrage individuals
spoke amongst each other without a
set organization.
▫ In 1911, Josephine Dodge founded the
“National Association Opposed to
Women's Suffrage” (NAOWS)
▫ Propaganda, Religious Leaders &
Articles.
Why?
▫ Opposing supporters believed that
most women didn’t want to vote or
didn’t have enough time to vote or stay
updated on political topics.
