The Revised Contract

Like really. I don’t know what else to say for him to believe me.

“But Santa, you have to believe me. I can do it this time. Besides, everyone deserves second
chances. “ and I took a sip of the brewed he offered me.

“Little girl, I believe you know how this works. This has been going on for years–tons of it. So
now, if you’re–“

“That’s the more reason why you have to extend my deadline or the deadline to those who are
like in my case.” I paused. “I doubt you’ve never done anything like this before.”

Fingers-crossed, I stared into Santa’s eyes while taking the last drop of my coffee. I wanted this
wish so much that I’m up for ‘everything’ that would cost it. I wasn’t able to take hold of it last
year and it’s not going to happen again. No, not this time.

“So Santa, what do you think?”

But he only answered me with silence.

“Look. I can start by doing more chores in the house than what I’m expected to do. Then maybe,
I can go for doing better in my studies, and go donating my old-but-still-working-things to the
less fortunate ones. I might also add to the list the stop bullying act on my brother. Then the list
goes on. Promise Santa, I’ll try to be one good girl from now on.”

Again, silence.

I stood up and walked around caressing the back of my own neck; as if it would help ease the
tension inside the room.

*Knock*

“Uhm, Santa. I don’t want to intervene but I would just like to let you know that we’re done with
the list you gave us for today.” said the elf wearing a green-and-red outfit.

“That would be for now. You go get some rest. Tell the others, too.” Santa replied.

Then he was off.

“Santa–“

“Alright. I’m giving you a week to prove that you can do it this time. Otherwise, say bye-bye to
your wish.” said he and walked to his table to reach for a paper and a pen.

“REALLY?” I said, full of excitement.

1
“Yes. However, there’s a big but. If you will not be able to do it this time, there shall be no more
other chances for you. Not even in the next years.”

“Okay, Santa.”

“Have a seat and sign this.” And he gave me the paper and the pen.

“A contract?” I asked.

“Yes. You take my word and I’ll take yours.”

Then without thinking twice and before Santa changes his mind, I took the pen and signed at the
bottom of the sheet.

“Thanks Santa. You really are–“

“Hey, Wake up! The sun’s up already. You’ll be late.” my mom said from the other side of the
door.

“Coming, mom.” I replied.

My head ached. The last time I remember, I was in Santa’s office. I was…

Some dream I had. I lay again, wanting to still close my eyes for it hurt. But before I was able to
do so, I noticed a paper on the top of my desk.

I neared it.

It was the paper I signed last night, and a note attached to it: Tick-tock little girl. The time’s
running.
