NAME:____________________________________ STUDENT NO. : __________________ SCORE: __________________

Direction : Solve the following problems with complete solutions and illustrations. Round off answers to two decimal places and indicate
correct units.

Situation 1 (20pts)
A beam 100 mm wide is to be loaded with 3 kN concentrated loads spaced uniformly at 0.40 m on centers throughout the 5 m span.
The following data are given: Allowable bending stress = 24.0 MPa; Weight of wood = 8 kN/m3. Find the depth ”d" considering
bending stress.
A. 254.21 mm B. 245.21mm C. 232.44mm D. 328.40mm

Situation 2 (30pts)
A 100 mm x 300 mm rectangular beam carries a uniformly distributed load of “W” kN/ m over its entire span. The beam is simply
supported at its ends. If the maximum allowable bending stress is 8.27 MPa and simultaneously the maximum allowable shearing
stress is 0.70 MPa,
1. Determine the maximum vertical shear that the beam could carry. (10pts)
A. 14 kN B. 20 kN C. 18 kN D. 10 kN
2. Determine the span of the beam based from the allowable bending stress and shearing stress. (10pts)
A. 4.03 m B. 2.30 m C. 3.54 m D. 5.30 m
3. Determine the maximum value of "W” that the beam could carry.(10pts)
A 9.03 kN/m. B. 7.91 kN/m C. 10.01 kN/m D.12.92 kN/m

Situation 3 (30pts)
A floor is supported by 75 mm x 200mm wooden joists spaced at 400 mm on centers with an effective Span of 3 m. The total floor
load transmitted to the joists is 5 kPa. Use weight of wood: 6 3 kN/m3 and Ew =12, 000 MPa.
1. Determine the value “of the maximum bending stress in the beam. (10pts)
A. 3.02 MPa B. 5.10 MPa C. 8.90 MPa D. 4.71 MPa
2. Determine the value of the maximum shearing stress in the beam. (10pts)
A. 0.314 MPa B. 3.01 MPa C. 2.30 MPa D. 1.00 MPa
3. Determine the maxinium deflection in the beam. (10pts)
A. 4.95 MPa B. 6.78 MPa C. 3.68 MPa D. 9.01 MPa

Situation 4 (10pts)
A 75 mm x 150 mm beam carries a central load P over a 1.2 m span. Square notches 25 mm deep are provided at the bottom of the
beam at the supports. Calculate the load P based on shear alone.
Allowable shear parallel to grain= 1.40 MPa
Allowable shear normal to grain= 1.85 MPa
A. 14.01 kN B. 16 kN
C. 12.15 kN. D. 13.42 kN

Situation 5 (10pts)
The truss is made from Guijo. The truss supports a vertical load P= 20 KN at C. Given the following allowable stresses for Grade of
Wood: Compression parallel to grain= 13.2 MPa; Compression perpendicular to grain=4.3 MPa; Shear Parallel to Grain= 2.32MPa.
1. What is the axial stress of member AC? (5pts)
A. 1.33 MPa B. 1.25 MPa
