PART-A

1. Define Fick’s 1st law of diffusion and also write equation for Fick’s second law.
2. Define Ji, Ni, mass average velocity and molar average velocity.
3. Prove that DAB= DBA

PART-B

1. Derive an equation for equimolar counter-current diffusion in gases at steady state.

2. A mixture of helium and nitrogen is contained in a pipe at 298K and 1.01325×10 3 N/m2
total pressure, which is constant throughout. At one end of the pipe at point 1, the partial
pressure PA1 of helium is 0.60795×105 N/m2 and other end at 0.2 m, PA2= 0.20265×105
N/m2. Calculate the flux of helium at steady state, if DAB is 0.687×10-4 m2/sec.
3. Calculate the diffusivity of acetic acid in dilute solution of water at 20oC.

Data: Molal volume of acetic acid = 0.0592 m3/kmol

Viscosity of water = 0.001 kg/m. sec.

Association factor for water = 2.26

4. List various theories of mass transfer and discuss in detail about any two of them.
