TYPES OF PHRASES

The Four Freedoms

Franklin Delano Roosevelt

A group of two or more words that function as one grammatical unit but lack a
subject and a verb is called a phrase. Noun phrases have two main parts: a noun,
called the head noun, and modifiers that tell which one or what kind. These
modifiers can appear before the noun, after the noun, or in both places.

A. DIRECTIONS: Underline each noun phrase in these examples from “The Four
Freedoms.” Some sentences will have more than one noun phrase. If there is a noun
phrase within a noun phrase, underline the shorter one twice.
1. Armed defense of democratic existence is now being gallantly waged in four
continents.
2. We need not overemphasize imperfections in the Peace of Versailles.
3. No one can tell the exact character of the emergency situations that we may be
called upon to meet.
4. Just as our national policy is this:...
5. A free nation has the right to expect full cooperation from all groups.

B. DIRECTIONS: Write the head nouns from the noun phrases above.
