achieving the best learning outcomes.

As the learning facilitator, you are requested to orient your students on the proper
use of this module and assist para-teachers – parents, elder siblings, and other
significant adults – to understand their potent role in optimizing this learning material
towards developing mutual responsibility for children’s success under the distant
learning set up.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body
of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

Finally, please do not forget to remind the learners to use separate sheets in
answering the pre-test, self-check exercises, and post-test.

4
What is It

Communication
Communication is a process of transferring and receiving information or messages
from one person to another. Communication occurs in many situations. It can be a
face-to-face interaction, a telephone conversation, a class discussion, meeting with
employees and employer, interview and many more. The following are the nature of
communication:

1. It is a process.
2. It transpires between two or more people (the sender and the receiver)
3. It can be expressed through verbal and nonverbal, or both at the same time.

Elements of communication
Below are the elements that make up an entire communication process.
1. Speaker – the source of information or message
2. Message – the information, ideas, or thoughts conveyed by the speaker in
words or in actions
3. Encoding – the process of converting the message into words, actions, or
other forms that the speaker understands
4. Channel – the medium or the means, such as personal or non-personal,
verbal or non-verbal, in which the encoded message is conveyed
5. Decoding – the process of interpreting the encoded message of the speaker
by the receiver
6. Receiver – the recipient of the message, or someone who decodes the
message
7. Feedback – the reactions, responses, or information provided by the receiver
8. Context – the environment where communication takes place
9. Barrier – the factors that affect the flow of communication

Process of Communication
According to Menoy (2010), communication is a process and, as such, it
comes in stages. It starts with the encoding and ends with the decoding. The encoder
is more popularly known as the sender of the message. He transmits his message
(for example, an idea) to the receiver, a more popular term for the decoder of the
message. The recipient tries to understand the message, and if he does,
communication takes place. He may then give his feedback. If there is a continuous
exchange of messages between the sender and the receiver, particularly in an oral
discourse, communication takes the form of a cycle. The illustration below in an
example of communication process.

5
Functions of communication
There are five functions of communication. These are control, social interaction,
motivation, emotional expression, and information dissemination.
1. Control – Communication functions to control behavior.
For example, a teacher’s instruction: “Review your lesson today, and be ready
for the quiz tomorrow”.

2. Social Interaction – Communication allows individuals to interact with others.

An example is a friend’s invitation: “Would you like some coffee or tea?”

3. Motivation – Communication motivates or encourages people to live better.

For instance, a best friend’s encouragement: “Don’t give up. Keep smiling my
friend. I am just here for you no matter what.”

4. Emotional expression – Communication facilitates people’s expression of their

feelings and emotions.
A birthday celebrant’s appreciation is an example: “ I am so glad that all of
you came here at my party!”

5. Information dissemination – Communication functions to convey information.

News on Television: COVID 19 is a pandemic.

6
