Applications of Newton’s Second Law of Motion

1. You are wearing shoes that have a coefficient of friction on rock of0.70. On how steep of a rock slope could
you stand without slipping (i.e. the angle between the slope and the horizontal)? (35o)
2. An 0.075 kg arrow is drawn back against bowstring and then released. The arrow makes an angle of 55o
with the string above and below the arrow, with the tension in string being 240 N. Determine the
acceleration of the arrow on its release. (3700 m/s2)
3. A skier of mass 65 kg accelerates down a hill that is 75 m long and 25 m high, at the start. She starts from
rest and accelerates uniformly to the bottom of the hill with a final speed of 12.4 m/s. Determine the
coefficient of friction between the skis and the snow under these conditions. (0.24)
4. A 125 g fuzzy dice hangs from the rear-view mirror of a car that accelerates uniformly away from the
intersection from rest. In 2.5 seconds the car is travelling at 18.5 m/s. What is the angle between the string
suspending the dice and the vertical? (41o)
5. A 2.0 kg wooden block is attached to a mass by a string passing
through a frictionless pulley (see diagram). If a mass of 0.50 kg is 2.0 kg
just sufficient to get the block to begin moving, determine the
type and magnitude of the coefficient of friction. (0.25)
6. A 2.0 kg wooden block is joined by string and frictionless 0.50
pulley to an unknown suspended mass. The coefficient of kg
friction for the block on the ramp is 0.25. If the incline is
20.0o, what mass must be suspended to initiate motion of the
block? (1.1 kg) 20.0o ?
7. A skier reaches the bottom of a hollow with a velocity of 20.0
m/s, and then coasts up a hill of 10.0o slope. If the skier coasts 75 m up the slope before stopping determine
the coefficient of friction. (0.10)
8. A 1.0 kg pendulum is suspended from the roof of a car travelling on a level road. Determine the
acceleration of the car if the pendulum makes a 10.0oangle with the vertical. (1.7 m/s2)
9. A 0.60 g spider hangs on its spider thread from the branch of a tree. A horizontal wind blows the spider and
the thread makes and angle of 35o from the vertical. Determine the force of the wind acting on the spider
and the tension in the thread. (4.1 x 10-3 N, 7.2 x 10-3 N)
