Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh on Wednesday made significant changes in his ministerial council involving some key
economic portfolios, including the MSME ministry given to former steel minister Shri Virbhadra Singh.

Dr. H.P. Kumar, CMD, NSIC, recently welcomed Shri Virbhadra Singh who has recently
assumed the charge of Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government
of India.
The MSME sector looks forward in scaling new heights under his guidance and leadership.

Ministry seeks push for SME’s

` 4300 cr allocation sought in Budget 2011-12

The ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) has sought a nearly 80% hike in budget allocation for 2011-12, over
`2400 cr in the last budget. The ministry aims to strengthen the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, expand
National Small Industries Corporation and initiate reforms in the Khadi sector.
Nearly 8% of the total demand is likely to be used for expansion of the NSIC.
Two other segments on the government’s priority list are the enhancement of the export potential of the Coir Board and the cluster
development for traditional artisans.
The MSME sector has demanded the adoption of a modified Goods & Services Taxes (GST) till the nationwide implementation of
the GST.

RBI cuts fee on outstation cheques

The Reserve Bank of India has decided to lower the service charge for outstation cheques up to ` 5,000 but allowed banks to levy a
higher fee for cheques above ` 1 lakh. The regulator said the new charges would be applicable from April’2011.
According to the revised schedule of charges in case of outstation cheques up to ` 5,000, the service charge has been halved to ` 25.
For amounts between ` 5,001 and ` 10,000, the levy has been retained at ` 50. Similarly, for cheques between ` 10,001 and ` 1 lakh,
the charge remains unchanged at ` 100.
Defence production plan to boost SME’s

Defence Minister A. K. Anthony unveiled the new defence production policy on January 13, giving special emphasis on SME
sector for supplying equipment, machineries and general consumables to the defence sector. The new policy seeks to create an
ecosystem conducive for the private industry, particularly for SME’s, to take an active role in indigenization and self reliance in the
defence sector. The government will set up a fund to support innovation and R&D activities and enhance technologies in defence.
The MSME ministry will hold an exhibition to educate entrepreneurs on defence requirements.

Korea appeals its co’s to invest in Indian MSME sector

Korean trade minister, Kim Jong-Hoon called on the Korean companies to invest in the Indian Micro, Small and Medium
Enterprise (MSME) sector.
The minister stated this while addressing the Business Session on "India – South Korea: Building Strategic Relationship",
organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in New Delhi on Thursday.
South Korea would like to partner India in its quest for economic development, he said and called upon the Korean companies to
invest in Indian MSME sector. At the same time he also called for lowering of entry barriers for Korean companies willing to
invest in India to facilitate investment by Korean companies.
