Anterior triangle

Boundaries:
Anteriorly: By the midline of the neck
Posteriorly: by the anterior border of sternomastoid muscle.
Superiorly: by the base of the mandible.
Divisions: it can be divided by the digastric and omohyoid muscle
into the following triangles:
Submental
Digastric
Carotid
Muscular
Submental triangle

Boundaries:
Medially: midline of the neck
Laterally: anterior belly of digastric
Inferiorly: body of the hyoid.
Floor: Mylohyoid muscle.

Contents:
 Submental lymph nodes
 Submental vessels
 Anterior jugular vein
Digastric Triangle

Boundaries:
Above: Body of the mandible.
Below & Anteriorly: Anterior belly of digastric.
Below& Posteriorly: Posterior belly of digastric & stylohyoid.
Floor:
Anteriorly: Mylohyoid muscle.
Posteriorly: Part of hyoglossus muscle.
Roof:
Skin & superficial fascia
Platysma& deep fascia
Contents:
 Submandibular salivary gland.
 Submandibular lymph nodes
 Anterior facial vein
 Facial artery
 Hypoglossal nerve
 Lingual nerve
 Mylohyoid nerve

Muscular triangle

boundaries:
Anteriorly: Midline of the neck.
Superiorly: Superior belly of omohyoid
Inferiorly: Anterior border of sternomastoid.

contents:

 Sternohyoid
 Sternothyroid
 Thyrohyoid

Sternohyoid
Origin: back on manubrium and medial end of clavicle
Insertion: medial part of the lower border of hyoid bone
Action: depression of hyoid bone
Nerve supply: ansa cervicalis

Sternothyroid
Origin: back on manubrium
Insertion: oblique line of thyroid cartilage
Nerve supply: ansa cervicalis
Action: depression of the larynx
Thyrohyoid
Origin: oblique line of thyroid cartilage
Insertion: lower border of hyoid bone
nerve supply: hypoglossal nerve (c1 fibres)
Action: depression of hyoid or elevation of larynx

carotid triangle

boundaries:

Superiorly: posterior belly of digastric.


Inferiorly: superior belly of omohyoid
Posteriorly: anterior border of sternomastoid

roof:
Skin & superficial fascia
Platysma& deep fascia

Floor:

 Thyrohyoid
 Hyoglossus
 Middle & inferior constrictors of the pharynx.
Contents:
 Internal jugular vein:
 Common & Internal carotid arteries
 External carotid artery:
It gives 8 branches, 5 of them are given off in the triangle:
Lingual artery
Facial artery
Superior thyroid artery
Ascending pharyngeal artery
Occipital artery
 Vagus nerve
 Cervical part of sympathetic trunk
 Accessory nerve
 Hypogloassal nerve
 Deep cervical lymph nodes
 Ansa cervicalis
 Common facial vein
