Disco originated in night clubs. Some of it originated in Philadelphia’s R&B scene. Philadelphia’s R&B
scene featured African American and Latino musicians and audiences. It also originated in private
dance parties in underground gay clubs in New York. Some influences were motown, funk, soft soul,
and Latin American salsa.

Disco died due to public backlash on July 12, 1979 - Disco Demolition Night. The Chicago White Sox
were supposed to play the Detroit Tigers on May 2, but the game got canceled due to rain. They
rescheduled for July 12 with a double header game. The White Sox had and a couple disk jockeys had
been fed up with disco for a while. They blew up a dumpster full of disco records in between double
headers. They actually offered 98 cents off your ticket if you brought a disco record to contribute to the
explosion. Fans stormed the field in anger. 39 were arrested, 9 were injured, and the second game was
canceled.
