Me and my partner were exploring a topic for this year’s National History Day

theme/project. We didn’t want to choose a common topic which made researching difficult.
After looking at several options, the topic ​Cold War Hotline​ was discovered. This issue
focuses on the​ Washington-Moscow Hotline​. It inspired communication between two
warring superpowers. It was a great idea to discuss since it relates to the theme of
communication. The lack of attention shown to this subject was an advantage to make it
our focal point of the project.
To gain more knowledge and information, we googled the​ Cold War Hotline ​and
pinpointed the ​Washington-Moscow Hotline​. We conducted our research through reliable
sources and websites. I can say I learnt plenty about the in-depth historic communication.
The additional information such as primary and secondary sources like images, texts, and
videos led us to a descriptive YouTube video. The video ​Oval Office addresses on the Cuban
Missile Crisis by John F. Kennedy​ would definitely help the audience with a clear view. The
material gave a better understanding of the issue. With this knowledge it made us confident
in building the foundation of the project.
As a team, we decided to construct our thoughts using a website as a platform. My
partner had participated in doing a website for last year's National History Day. As for me, I
was okay with the decision too since it combined our creativities. Secondly, it would’ve
been a new experience for me. In the end, it was surprisingly fair and a fun process. It was a
practical decision because it was something peaceful yet exciting. Especially with the
constant virtual communication, it was way easier in accomplishing the plan. Regarding the
topic, forming a hotline on such platform made it visually clear.
The Cold War Hotline/Washington-Moscow Hotline ​fit this year’s theme of
communication. Stating the thesis, the occurrence encouraged communication between the
two warring superpowers. By using the hotline, both nations were able to communicate
with one another and make sure that neither made reckless actions that would result in
catastrophic consequences. Clearly, this relates to this year’s theme.
