Media has a huge impact on human lives especially during a time of the pandemic. A lot of us
depend on social media for entertainment, business, education, news, communications and
more. Many of us express our opinions, beliefs, and feeling about a lot of issues around us via
social media. However, as we enjoy the comfort of technology, there are issues and dangers
that we need to know.

DIGITAL
DIVIDE
Even if we live in the Digital Age,
there are still parts of the world that
do not have access to the Internet
because it is either in a remote area
or in extreme poverty. Digital Divide
refers to the economic, educational,
and social inequalities experienced
by those who cannot afford to have
computer and internet access.

wifi_2020-05-21_15-53-58.jpg
3
In the Philippines, we do not experience restriction when it comes to acquiring information and
choosing the mode of communication we want unlike other countries. However, our country has
one of the slowest Internet connection compared to its other Asian counterparts. This is brought
by the limited Internet Service Providers (ISP) in our country.

Although the Department of Education (DepEd) is making efforts to provide a stronger Information
and Communication Technology (ICT) curriculum and to improve its facilities disabled students
still have limited resources for their use.

As we live in the 21st century, having information and technology skills is necessary. Therefore,
the digital divide could hinder a person to become information, media, and technology literate.

❖ ADDICTION

Addiction refers to a condition in

which a person seems to have
lost control over an action or
behavior, which means mental
health practitioners are deemed
as self-destructive. For example,
when a person who employs
playing poker or casino develops
addiction, he will feel the urge to
do it under all circumstances.
https://media2.picsearch.com/is?rlL6-
Can addiction be present in r2KKV4g4peWr88WJ8AXBoKjAVK1CKviAs6_Xqk&height=2
different media platforms 55

A person can become addicted to playing too much computer. At first, the person sees video
games as something interesting, so he plays them during break time. But once the person feels
the urge to be playing computer constantly because it is pleasurable even if he can no longer
carry out his responsibilities, he can be perceived as someone who has become addicted to
computer gaming.

On the other hand, some people become addicted to online shopping. People who have become
obsessed with usually end up staying late at night just to wait for discounts, promos, or bid for
products being sold online. As a result, they become heavily indebted due to their credit card
purchases. People addicted to online shopping are obsessive-compulsive buyers. This means
that they purchase products they do not need due to sudden urge or impulse. In the end, their
house becomes a mess from the clutter of products they have no use for.

4
Also, others become hooked to using too much social media. These people tend to be obsessed
with updating their status or tweets and checking out their friends’ posts. They also have become
addicted to putting comments on almost every online post they see. Hence, people who have
become addicted to social media are unable to finish their responsibilities like school
assignments, which could result in poor performance. Some of them can even suffer from health
deterioration and visual impairment because of their inability to prioritize their condition over their
desire to open their social media accounts.

Even though virtual gaming, online shopping, and the use of social media do not involve abuse
of prohibited drugs, a person who has become addicted to such needs professional help since
his action has made him unproductive.

Treatments for those who have become computer addicts depend upon the person’s willingness
to receive help. They need understanding and support so that they can overcome the addiction
and eventually get back on their old self.

❖ BULLYING

With the advent of technology,

bullying can now also be done
through the Internet. This is known
as Cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is
bullying that takes place over digital
devices like cell phones,
computers, and tablets.
Cyberbullying can occur through
SMS, Text, and apps, or online in
social media, forums, or gaming
where people can view, participate
in, or share content. Some
cyberbullying crosses the line into
unlawful or criminal behavior.

Cyberbullying can include:

● Sending means emails, texts, or instant messages.
● Sending neutral messages to someone to the point of harassment.

5
● Posting hurtful things about someone on social media.
● Spreading rumors or gossip about someone online.
● Making fun of someone in an online chat that includes multiple people.
● Attacking or killing an avatar or character in an online game, constantly and on purpose.
● Pretending to be another person by creating a fake online profile.
● Threatening or intimidating someone online or in a text message.
● Taking an embarrassing photo or video and sharing it without permission.

On the other hand, bullies also need help so they can stop bullying and start to realize that their
action poses harm to other people. Although cyberbullying may not involve actual physical
contact, this social problem should be properly addressed because an individual’s overall well-
being is affected. Victims of cyberbullying can be given support by showing them care and letting
them feel empowered. On the other hand, bullies also need help so they can stop bullying and
start to realize that their action poses harm to other people.

Read the following infographic from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)
to get insight into how a good digital citizen should behave.

Mario knew that Jessie didn’t like him. Jessie hadn’t liked him since first grade. But now that
they’re in middle school, things are getting completely out of hand. What started with dirty
looks and snickering has turned into nasty emails, mean texts, and online rumors. Earlier today,
Mario found out about a Facebook page called “Mario Cheats” where Jack and his friends were
posting lies about Mario cheating in class. Mario can’t ignore this anymore.

1. How do you think Mario might feel when he reads this?
