1st Reading: Genesis 23:1-4, 19; 24:1-8, 62-67
The burial of Sarah. Abraham finds a wife for Isaac
Sarah lived one hundred twenty-seven years; this was the length of Sarah’s life. And Sarah died at Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron) in the land of Canaan; and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. Abraham rose up from
beside his dead, and said to the Hittites, “I am a stranger and an alien residing among you; give me property among you for
a burying place, so that I may bury my dead out of my sight.” After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the
field of Machpelah facing Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. Abraham said to his
servant, the oldest of his house, who had charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh and I will make you
swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites, among whom I live, but will go to my country and to my kindred and get a wife for my son Isaac.” The servant
said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land; must I then take your son back to the land
from which you came?” Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my son back there. The Lord, the God of
heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To
your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. But if
the woman is not willing to fllow you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back
there.”
Now Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi, and was settled in the Negeb. Isaac went out in the evening to walk in the field;
and looking up, he saw camels coming. And Rebekah looked up, and when she saw Isaac, she slipped quickly from the
camel, and said to the servant, “Who is the man over there, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my
master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. Then Isaac
brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was
comforted after his mother’s death.
Responsorial: Psalm 105:1-5

for his great love is without end.

Then Rebekah took the best garments of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on her
younger son Jacob; and she put the skins of the kids on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. Then she handed the
savory food, and the bread that she had prepared, to her son Jacob.
So he went in to his father, and said, “My father”; and he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” Jacob said to his father,
“I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, so that you may bless me.” But Isaac
said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” He answered, “Because the Lord your God granted
me success.” Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near, that I may feel you, my son, to know whether you are really my son
Esau or not.” So Jacob went up to his father Isaac, who felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the
hands of Esau.” He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him.
He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He answered, “I am.” Then he said, “Bring it to me, that I may eat of my son’s game
and bless you.” So he brought it to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank. Then his father Isaac said to
him, “Come near and kiss me, my son.” So he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his garments, and
blessed him, and said, “Ah, the smell of my so is like the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed. May God give you of the
dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine. Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down
to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and
blessed be everyone who blesses you!”

you reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest. He shall raise the sheaf before
the Lord, that you may find acceptance; on the day after the sabbath the priest shall raise it.
And from the day after the sabbath, from the day on which you bring the sheaf of the elevation offering, you shall count off
seven weeks; they shall be complete. You shall count until the day after the seventh sabbath, fifty days; then you shall
present an offering of new grain to the Lord.
Speak to the people of Israel, saying: On the fifteenth day of this seventh month, and lasting seven days, there shall be the
festival of booths to the Lord. The first day shall be a holy convocation; you shall not work at your occupations. Seven days
you shall present the Lord’s offerings by fire; on the eighth day you shall observe a holy convocation and present the Lord’s
offerings by fire; it is a solemn assembly; you shall not work at your occupations.
These are the appointed festivals of the Lord, which you shall celebrate as times of holy convocation, for presenting to the
Lord offerings by fire, burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings, each on its proper day.

He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and sews it on an old garment; otherwise the new
will be torn, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And nobody puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise
the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh
wineskins. And nobody after drinking old wine desires new wine, but says, ‘The old is good.'”

01 November. Feast of All Saints
1st Reading: Revelation (7:2-4, 9-14
Vast numbers were sealed with the sign of the Living God
I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice
to the four angels who had been given power to damage earth and sea, saying, “Do not damage the earth or sea trees, until
we have marked servants of our God with a seal on their foreheads.” And I heard number those who were sealed, one
hundred forty-four thousand, sealed out every tribe people of Israel.
After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that nobody could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples
and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They
cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the
angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the
throne and worshiped God, singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and
might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in
white, and where have they come from?” I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are
they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before
you.”
