WHEREAS: On January 6th, 2021, the world watched in disbelief as thousands of Trump supporters,
under the instruction of President Trump, violently overtook the U. S Capitol to
interfere with the certification of electoral votes of President-Elect Joseph Biden’s 2020
Presidential election win; and,
WHEREAS: For hours, the world watched these domestic terrorists vandalize Capitol offices, steal
and destroy Capitol property, and carry around weapons intending to cause harm to
members of Congress and staff; and,
WHEREAS: The insurrection on January 6th was not only instigated by President Trump, but also by
several GOP senators and representatives who continued to spread false rhetoric about
the November 2020 Presidential election being rigged and voter fraud conspiracy
theories, despite being denied in multiple federal courts across the country; and,
WHEREAS: The last time an insurrection happened at the Capitol was the War of 1812, where on
August 24, 1814, British troops invaded Washington D.C and torched the Capitol
building after achieving victory over American forces at Bladensburg, Maryland; and,
WHEREAS: The attempted coup on January 6th resulted in the death of 5 individuals, including a
Capitol police officer, and at least 52 arrested. This was a direct threat to national
security and democracies that value the peaceful transition of power all over the world,
and that look to the United States as a leader; and,
WHEREAS: This disgraceful event also highlights the shameful double standards and reality of law
enforcement when it comes to Black activists and White protesters. Whereas, if it had
been Black activists breaching the Capitol they would have been met with a more fierce
response; and,
WHEREAS: As elected officials, we are expected to uphold and defend the United States
Constitution and its democratic processes. We must hold individuals accountable when
they fail to keep that oath, starting with the immediate removal of Donald J. Trump
from the office of President. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED: That Boston City Council calls for the removal of Donald J. Trump from the office of
President and condemns the violent insurrection of Trump supporters that took place at
the U.S Capitol on January 6th, 2021.
