and the container. What we had in mind here was a place where
the architectonic or urban value has been repeatedly dismissed, a site
where architects have repeatedly proposed radical reconstruction,
a locality that has been repeatedly integrated into a growing urban
structure only to decay once more, yet nonetheless is now a ”privileged
sites of identity, of encounter between present and past“.51 This
typology is likewise shaped by repeated closing, ‘containerisation’, with
the endpoint of realising the “ritual of consumption”.52 We investigated
and defined it using the example of Kamenné námestie, which across its
history has fluctuated between the no-man’s-land of the terrain vague
and the enclosed form of consumption – the container.53 Identical
characteristics can, in turn, be applied as well to Trnavské mýto. The
third type of urban situation, ‘From Unique to Generic’, includes places
that over the past century changed from authentic documents of the
past into unified and artificial cityscapes of the present. Following
the approach of Solà-Morales, this typology can itself be interpreted
by the previous two categories of terrain vague and container. And this
type of urban situation itself shifted in various historical epochs to the
character of an ambiguously overlayered emptiness and at others to
a strongly enclosed complex for consumption of a given political, social
or commercial ritual. This urban situation, in our research, was found
in the cases of the Castle Hill and the Podhradie district at its foot.
An urban situation all its own is provided by the Danube embankment.54

a presadzovania ideologických či ekonomických plánov elít.
centre vlády a administratívy krajiny.61
pamiatok. Skúmanie okolností vyhlásenia mestskej pamiatkovej
rezervácie v Bratislave v roku 1954 prinieslo poznatky o procese
Hradu s podhradím a mestského jadra v tomto procese. Tieto
ilustruje celé spektrum hospodárskych a ideologických súvislostí,
ktoré vplývajú na tento proces.62

to the category of terrain vague. Practically throughout the 19th and
20th centuries, the banks of the Danube were used for testing a wide
range of urban and architectonic conceptions intended to integrate the
locality into the city structure, yet not one of them was ever realised to
its full extent. Indeed, the opposite was true: fragmentary interventions
left the riverbank in a desolate state. In consequence, up until the end of
the 20th century it remained a place where the past stood in conflict with
the present, yet also forming one of the last urban ”redoubt in which to
exercise the liberty of the individual or the small group“.56 For the fifth
type of urban situations, ‘Fragments of Concepts’, it best matches the
character of the cultural category terrain vague. This area was itself
in the past the repeated object of ambitious urban and architectonic
intentions, of which only fragments were ever realised and are now
regarded as mere remnants in the context of the compact urban tissue.
Our identification and investigation of this typology focused on the
area of the former northern suburbs in the area of today’s Námestie
slobody.57 The next typology, ‘City-Shaping Modernity’, is the only
one in Bratislava’s urban structure characterised by the systematic
application of modern regulation in a larger contiguous area. Our
identification and description of this typology was made in relation to
the ‘Danube District’ (Dunajská štvrť) in the area of Jakubovo námestie,
Grösslingová and Bezručova,58 though the same type can also be
identified, e.g. in the area around Cintorínska and Moskovská ulica
or the streets Heydukova, Hollého and Kolárska. For interpretation of
the next situational typology, which we termed the ‘Ambiguous Ring’,
a tretie desaťročie 20. storočia a taktiež štyridsiate a šesťdesiate roky
a výstavby mesta výrazne ovplyvnili konkrétne osobnosti architektov
a urbanistov ako Antal Palóczi, Alois Balán, Jiří Grossmann, Friedrich
Weinwurm, Josef Marek, Kamil Gross, Ivan Matušík, Štefan Svetko,
Milan Hladký či Milan Beňuška. Súčasne sa podarilo odhaliť
mimoriadny vplyv niektorých osobností z prostredia lokálneho
industriálneho a finančného kapitálu na proces plánovania. Boli
to práve aktéri hospodárskej súťaže, ktorí opakovane iniciovali
regulačné úpravy, či ich dokonca priamo objednávali. Predstavitelia

Bratislava’s inner ring-road, from the movement of traffic up to the
movements launched through modernisation, economic growth, social
change, or paradigm shifts in architecture or urban planning.59 The
cultural category of ‘Flows’ also applies to the interpretation of the
eighth typology, which characterises the situation at the intersection of
radials with the outer ring road: places that modernist urban planning
tended to define first in the early 20th century through solid urban
blocks and then, in the century’s second half, through prominent
freestanding objects. Yet in the final analysis, each form was most
strongly determined by the traffic flow. As for the next type of urban
situation, the ‘Synchronized movements’, it too can be interpreted as
a flow: this category involves the process of constructing, altering or
removing rail lines within the city area and the related development
of industrial areas. Immediately linked to this type of urban situation
is the ninth typology, ‘From Factory to Downtown’, including sites
where a former industrial zone has been turned into a social centre
with various functional designations. This type can best be captured
with the paired categorisation of terrain vague and container, though
once again in this case we see the repeated transformation of one
category into the other. We examined and defined the typology
through the example of the Zone Chalupkova, which changed from
a semi-permeable grouping of manufacturing complexes into a new
urban centre with a series of enclosed cultural, commercial, office and
residential structures.60 The next type of urban situation, which we
termed ‘From Sports to Commerce’, is best matched by the container
category, focusing (as should be evident) on the stage of construction
in which various sporting grounds were rebuilt as exclusive, enclosed

pretržite a diskontinuitne.
či nedeklarované pokračovanie vízií a zámerov predchádzajúcich
a morfológiou ovplyvňuje myslenie architektov, urbanistov a investorov.

formulation of clearance legislation as well as the negotiations around
its implementation were tested in the localities of today’s Námestie
slobody as well as the Castle Hill and Podhradie, which were
historically focal points for reflections on the city as a national centre
of government and administration.61
Another process that had a greatly significant effect on the
form of the urban structure of European cities in the 20th century was
the protection of built monuments. Our research into the background
of the declaration of the urban heritage zone in Bratislava in 1954
provided much information about the process of the territorial
protection of the historical centre, which in fact began at the very start
of the 20th century, i.e. far earlier than the period after World War II
that witnessed the general proclamation of urban heritage
reservations. We uncovered as well the complicated relationship
between the Castle and the area below it, and the historic urban
core within this process. Though these historically separate entities
have long been regarded in terms of the composition of the historic
structure of the city and its silhouette as a single indivisible whole,
nonetheless in the 1950s and 1960s they were treated in quite
different ways. This stage of the process of applying heritage
protection in the area of the urban reservation illustrates the entire
spectrum of economic and ideological circumstances bringing
influence to bear upon this process.62
