Beast Wars II & Beast Wars Special - Complete Reference Guide PDF
Beast Wars II & Beast Wars Special - Complete Reference Guide PDF
Beast Wars II (Second) was an animated series that originally ran in Japan on the TV Tokyo Network from April 1, 1998 to January 27, 1999. The
show and its sequel, Beast Wars Neo, were meant to fill the time gap while Japan waited for the Canadian / American production of Beast Wars /
Beasties to complete airing the 2nd and 3rd seasons so that they could be dubbed into Japanese.
Beast Wars II features a new cast of characters set many years in the future, who travel to a post apocalyptic Earth now known as the planet Gaia.
The Cybertrons, led by Lio Convoy, are sent to the planet to investigate an unusual change in the planet’s behavior and thus thwart the Destrons,
led by Galvatron, who seek to consume the planet’s rich source of energy called Angolmois.
We hope all fans out there enjoy the tremendous work and long hours that our team put into this series. We especially want to thank our translator
and amazing friend, Takae, who spent many long hours ensuring that this show would be fully understood by every fan out there with all the small
nuances of Japanese culture that are present in the series. Without her dedication to this project, this series would have never seen the light of day.
Beast Wars Specials
Other big thank yous go out to Gyumaoh for providing the film book, Ruisui for filling in the missing lines for the , and again to
Takae, for ensuring the translation was correct for these added bonuses to this release.
As well, a huge thank you goes out to Micchan and Taitai for reading the Kanji names for the credits of the TV series, so that we could give the
Opening and Endings a professional look.
We also want to thank Walruslaw, Rockman666, Gyumaoh, Transformers At The Moon, williamjames88, Tako Tank, and Anonymoussan for their
contributions to the extras that were included in this set. Because of them, this release has some amazing bonuses for everyone to enjoy.
Finally, a big thank you goes out to one of the biggest Beast Wars fans out there, Primal Sabbath, for taking the painstaking task of going through
each script line by line to ensure that spelling and grammar mistakes were kept to a minimum.
So, in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Beast Wars franchise, Karyuudo Fansubs is proud to present one of the longest sought series to be
fully translated in English for Transformers fans outside of Japan.
Please enjoy the show!

Glossary of Terms:
Transforming:
During the Beast Wars series, the nd
Cybertrons a Destrons used Henshin
(変身) rather than the traditional Transform command when they
changed forms. Henshin literally means metamorphosis,
to change one’s outer appearance o r to simply
transform. Beast Wars II
Since the series
uses both Henshin and Transform , we wanted to differentiate between them using a different word for the command code. Thus we’re using the
term Metamorph for the Cybertron and Insectron t ransformation sequences. Funny enough though, in the Beast Wars II Henshin
manga,
(変身) is
written, but beside it in katakana characters, they’ve written Transform (トランスフォーム).
Honorific Titles:
As Beast Wars II is a moderately heavy Japanese themed show, we’ve decided to keep the honorific titles such as san (さん) (for adults in the
same frame of Mr. or Mrs.), kun
(君) (for young boys), chan (
ちゃん) sama
(for young girls), (様) (for people with high authority such as a Lord or
Master)
as part of the dialogue.
Jokes and Humor:
Many of the jokes that are presented in the series are common within Japanese culture. Since those outside of Japan might not quite understand
the meaning behind some of the humor, we’ve tried our best to include notes within this document to explain these as much as possible.
Understandably, some jokes and humoristic situations are very difficult to translate properly, especially when it comes with expressions involving
homonyms and puns.
Spelling of Character Names:
Since there are several different ways out there of spelling the characters’ names in English, we’ve had to choose what we felt was correct. We’ve
recognized the alternatives in brackets beside each character's names. With the planet Gaia
for example, there is another way of spelling it which is
Gaea. However we chose Gaia, Gaia
as the spelling since on the console screen of the Cybertrons ship in episode 1, it’s clearly spelled there.
The Planet Gaia:
Planet Gaia is a post apocalyptic Earth, where humans have long since abandoned the planet. Left behind within a dome on the moon, are two
guardians Artemis and Moon .
In Greek mythology, Gaia
was the personification of the Earth and one of the Greek primordial deities. Gaia was the
great mother of all: the primal Greek Mother Goddess; creator and giver of birth to the Earth and all the Universe; the heavenly gods, the Titans, and
the Giants were born to her.
Japan vs Western:
With this release we’ve included the options of two subtitle tracks, one for the original Japanese factions, honorifics, and command code when
changing modes, and a second for the Western versions of those. With the exception of the Beast Wars Special Beast Wars Metals Special,
and all
characters names remain the same with the exception of Convoy being called
Optimus Primal in the Beast Wars II Movie.

Translator Notes: Majin Zarak is a Destron from a point in history and brought to Planet Gaia. He transforms into a giant battle carrier of which
he scans from Gaia Majin
. The word devil, evil spirit or a genie. I
(魔神) refers to a t’s unknown if Majin Zarak has any relation to Mega Zarak or
Black Zarak from the previous Transformers’ series.
Other Characters
Artemis
Translator Notes: Artemis's name is taken from Artemis: the Goddess of the Hunt and the Moon. Her mallet represents the tool that’s used for
smashing mochi sticky rice
(literally ) during New Year festivals. Part of typical Japanese comedy, she hits her partner Moon over his head when
he gets out of hand, or she’s angry over something trivial. Her character's’ appearance could also be referenced from Kaguyahime who is the
main character in the Japanese folktale, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
Moon
Translator Notes: Gaia
Moon is a rabbit guardian who watches over with his partner, Artemis. Moon’s character is based on the folklore tale of a
moon
rabbit in the moon. Moon has much of his dialogue end with the word creating a custom dialect which is common with several characters
throughout this series
.
Copy BB / Convoy/ Tasmanian Kid / Scuba / Bighorn / Apache
Translator Notes: Exact copies the original characters they’re created from in episode 18, with the only difference of being in black and white
just like a black and white photocopying machine. Both share the exact same abilities and knowledge at the time when they were scanned by the
copy machine. However, the copy regards the original as their enemy and will do anything to destroy him and claim the title of being the original
for themselves.
Episode Notes:
QUATRAIN #1072 NOSTRADAMUS PROPHECY #1072
In the year 1999 and seven months, In the year one thousand nine hundred ninety nine, seventh month,
From the skies shall come a great and terrible King of Terror. From the sky will come a "grand Roi deffrayeur"
To raise again the great king of the Mongols, To resurrect the great king of the "Angolmois".
Before and after, war reigns for a goodcause.
Before and after, War shall reign at will.
Unfortunately, no one was able to successfully translate the French word Angolmois,
and who was this "grand Roi deffrayeur" who was
going to arrive out of the sky in the month of July? The only word in any known language that is spelled ANGOL is Angola, a former
Portuguese African colony, and the phrase "grand Roi deffrayeur" translates as "great Leader of frightening power."
● Bighorn
While ude ga naru
is working out, he uses a common expression (腕がなる) which means f
or one to be itching to put one's skills to
use
.
● Scuba Supreme Commander
makes a metaphor comparing their loss of a Shougi
in reference to a game of which is Japanese chess.
● While playing their game of
Seibertronian g ame of chess,
Diver s "check!"
ays "ōte!"
in Japanese by saying (王手). This is an influence of
international chess and is not required in the rules, however, players will say it as a courtesy.
● During the Seibertronian
game of chess that Tasmanian Kid and lay,
Diver p sks
Tasmanian Kid a Diver
to
let him have another chance a t
winning, but Diver
refuses this request by saying that he can’t undo that move.
The way the dialogue is played out is very difficult to translate, since the reference of generosity is related to water that’s fresh vs water
that’s old and spoiled.
Tasmanian Kid Sonna~, mizu kusai
(
そんなー、水くさい) No way, be more frank with me! / No way, your generosity stinks! / No way,
your water stinks!
Diver Mizu wa kusatte mahen (
水は腐ってまへん) Yes, way! / The water hasn't gone spoiled!
● Tasmanian Kid dasai
uses a common word (ださい) that young kids would use to describe if something was
uncool.
● When Tasmanian Kid and re on top of
Diver a Scuba Tasmanian Kid
, Ika nante ika shi teru ze
uses a bad joke (烏賊なんてイカしてるぜ).
Ika
This is bad pun using which means squid, and ikasu (
いかす) which means for something to be cool or stylish looking.
● The term Honbu HQ
(本部) in this series refers to Headquarters.
or However this term can also be used in the business world as
Head
Office.
● Cybertrons
Before the change forms, Tasmanian Kid refers to their robot modes as sentou modo (戦闘モード). In the guidebooks, they
battle modes,
have this written in English as sentou c
so we’ve stuck with that since an refer to combat / battle / fight.
● Megastorm koushaku (
presents himself as the Prince / Duke 公爵) of Destruction.
● Megastorm mentions to the Cybertrons t
hat they’ve entered into an enemy’s ring thinking they could win. His reference refers to going into a
boxing ring to fight an opponent.
● Megastorm iikimida
says ( いい気味だ) which refers to someone deserving whatever bad happens to them.
● Starscream
Before BB
and retreat,
Starscream makes a comment using the term Taigakusu (
退学) which refers to dropping out or quit
from something. Sometimes this term is used in expressions when dropping out of school.
Episode 2: White Lion, Run! (白いライオン, 走る! )
● Starscream Dirge
refers to Thrust
and oobokeconbi (
as an 大ボケコンビ) which is literally a funny man duo. However in this situation he’s
notsofunny duo.
actually referring them to be a Usually a Japanese comedy duo or a double act is called a manzai (漫才). How it works is
that there are two comedians, the boke (
ボケ) who is the funny man tsukkomi (
, and the 突っ込み) who is the straight man. Most of the
jokes revolve around mutual misunderstandings, doubletalk, puns and other verbal gags. In recent times, manzai has often been associated
Osaka
with the manzai
region, and Dirge
comedians often speak in the Kansai dialect during their acts. This is reflected in both and Thrust’s
characters as they both speak entirely in Kansai dialect.
● Starscream says Lion itchouagari (ライオン一丁上がり) which is an older way of saying dekiagari ( 出来上がり) which means we’re done!
● Tasmanian Kid Inumoarukebabōniataru (
uses a proverb saying: 犬も歩けば棒に当たる) which literally means "A dog that trots about, is
bound to find a bone." There’s also a negative spin on that by saying “Even if a dog trots about, it will eventually bump into a pole.”
● Tasmanian Kid describes
Starscream and
BB yakkosan
as (奴さん) which is a rude way of saying that you know those guys. We decided
goons
to use Tasmanian Kid
since doesn’t like the
Destrons.
● Starscream Bighorn
refers to mo~mo~chan
as a (モーモーちゃん) or literally a moocow . In Japan, the sound that cows make is mo~
rather
moo
than here in the West. You could also say that as calling him a
Starscream w little moo moo.
● Tasmanian Kid
The first thing that mentions is that he wishes that he had scanned something that could fly, however he doesn’t use the
byu~n
word for fly, but the sound related to flying which is (ビューン).
● When Diver returns from patrol, he greets everyone with maido (まいど) which is a Kansai dialect of saying hi howdy i
or n this case.
● Plankton (singular plankter) are a diverse group of organisms that live in the water column and cannot swim against a current. They provide
a crucial source of food to many large aquatic organisms, such as fish and whales.
● Tasmanian Kid uses a modified proverb by saying Hachi no warui nakittsuranihachi ( 蜂の悪い泣きっ面に蜂) which literally means, “It's
more like a bee stinging an ugly bee's crying face…” However the proverb should instead say, nakittsuranihachi ( 泣きっ面に蜂)
“misfortunes seldom come alone” or “when it rains, it pours.”
● Dirge and Thrust make fun of
Starscream a nd BB’s
team by calling them a dekoboko combi (凸凹コンビ) which is literally means an
uneven duo, but the underlying insult is basket case duo.
● Another proverb given by Kid
at the end of the show is Wazawaitenjitefukutonasutte ne ( 災い転じて福となすってね) or literally, "bad luck
often brings good luck".
● During Artemis Moon’s
and corner show, Moon gets confused on the Angolmois energy pronunciation and thinks that Artemis said
Ankoromochi energy (あんころ餅エネルギー). Ankoromochi is a Japanese sticky rice cake with sweet red bean paste.
● Tonbot’s handling of the English language is poor which is probably because he’s supposed to be portrayed as a slapstick character. We’ve
tried our best to work with his dialogue given this fact.
● Thrust gets mad at
Starscream b y saying: kashiagate (下賜あがて) which indicates one giving / saying something to someone of low social
standing (by a person of very high social standing.)
● During the search for the Insectrons Tasmanian Kid
, says Kotchi no mizu wa amai zo (こっちの水は甘いぞー) which literally means “The
water here tastes sweet!” This is a verse from an old children’s song called r literally “
Hotaru Koi o Come, firefly.”
● Starscream’s operational plan named Mori no Kokagete
(森の木陰て) literally means " The shade of the woods.
" Itis a verse from an old
children’s song called Mori no Kiboto (森の小人) literally meaning Dwarfs of the woods. I
n the song, the verses sing of a donjarahoi (ドン
ジャラホイ) which seems to be a rallying cry for a festival or party that is happening. Although Starscream clearly states his operational plan
“The shade of the woods”,
is “The festival in the woods”
we’ve adjusted this to since his reference is related to the true meaning within the
song that it’s referenced from.
● Tasmanian Kid
The box that is carrying on his back with oil inside, is very similar to how merchants or peddlers used to carry medicine and
other supplies back in old times. Even today, some companies which do home delivery of medicine still use those types of boxes, however
rather than carrying them down the street on their backs, they transport them by vehicles.
Episode 10: Autorollers, Move Out! (オートローラーズ出撃せよ!)
● Starscream
uses a harisen (ハリセン) to hit BB on his head. Literally the name meansslapping fan,
and is basically a giant paper fan,
manzai
usually made in a closed fashion. Traditionally it’s used as part of a comedy act
(漫才) , in which the straight man (tsukkomi) smacks
boke
the funny man ( ) in response to their jokes or idiocy.
● During the Second Transmission, Artemis
Moon,
says to Starscreamsama no sho o youchi asagake osottari shite
(スタースクリーム様
の処を夜討ち朝駆け襲ったりしてー) or literally, “I might attempt a night raid and a dawn attack at Starscreamsama's place!” In this
sentence, the use of youchi asagake (夜討ち朝駆け) is a term that reporters use when they want to get a story or a scoop out of someone
by confronting / interviewing them either late at night or early in the morning. You can also see this is reflected in ctions as she’s
Artemis’s a
taking notes like a reporter in the scene. Since this term isn’t that commonly used in normal everyday dialogue, some people could have
misheard this as using the terms youbai (夜這い) literally “creeping at night into a woman's bedroom” a nd asakaeri (朝帰り) literally “staying
out all night and coming home in the morning.” Although you kind of wonder if the writers did this intentionally knowing what Artemis’s
feelings are towards Starscream .
● When Bighorn Scylla
grabs the doll of washino imo musume
, he says: (わしのいも娘ー!) The word eans
imo m sweet potato
and this
sentence is just expressing a goofup on Bighorn’s imo i
part by saying ika
nstead of (which means squid.)
● Coelagon uses a common Japanese idiom, Kamenokō yori toshi no kōja
(亀の甲より年の劫じゃ) which literally means The years of
more common expression would be
experience is harder than a turtle's shell. A The older, the wiser.
● When the Insectrons Cybertrons,
arrive to assist the Bigmos
Lio Convoy
and use an expression related to sports such as soccer by saying,
pass wa agetaze (パスはあげたぜ) and then shoot wo tatakikonde yaru (シュートを叩き込んでやる!)
● Bighorn Hell’s Hot Springs of Beppu.
mentions a tour of jigoku
The (地獄) or Hell’s
of Beppu, are eight spectacular hot springs for viewing
rather than bathing. They are presented to visitors in a rather touristy fashion, which might not appeal to everybody. Six of the hells are
located in the Kannawa district and two in the more remote Shibaseki district.
● Bighorn Lio Convoy
tells that his feeling of being in a place he’s seen before is called a devuja
(デブじゃ) which is literally saying “a fat
person.” What he really means to say is that’s it’s a “dejavu” or French for literally “seen before”
● Ansan (あんさん) is a kansai way of saying you.
● Santon uses an extremely polite and respectful way of telling Lio Junior
to advance forward with them to fight Galvatron by saying
mairimasu (参ります). This is usually reserved for being respectful to ones of a higher class than yourself, or for putting yourself
intentionally under others out of courtesy or respect.
Episode 27: Megastorm Reborn (新生メガストーム)
● Lio Junior tries to address Lio Convoy chichiue
as (父上) which is an old fashioned way of addressing one’s father. This was commonly
used in samurai families prior to the Meiji era (1868).
● Apache messes up saying Nemesis, by calling it Memeshi (メメシ). We’re not sure if he was referring to memeshi (女々しい) which means
effeminacy Effeminacy
. are traits in a human boy or man that are more often associated with feminine nature.
● When Diver is swimming around the Niagara base, Scuba asks him not to bother him and Lio Junior.
Scuba’s m editation form is that of a
Buddhist who meditates under a waterfall.
● BB doesn’t understand the word ristora (リストラ) which means restructuring. He thinks more simply that Starscream was referring to risu
(リス) which means squirrel, and tora (トラ) which means tiger.
Of course this is another example of a play on words which we cannot
translate accurately in English, so therefore we’ve left it as is, since it works because BB i
s clueless about everything.
● A coups d'état is a French word which refers to overthrowing, or the sudden and forced seizure of a state, usually instigated by a small
group of the existing government establishment to depose the established regime and replace it with a new ruling body.
● Santon mentions to Skywarp that
“I heard a tale that lions throw their cubs down from the top of a deep valley and raise only the ones who
come up on their own.” Based on reality, this is not
true. Real lions go save their cubs if it happens. What this refers to is an old tale of a
legendary lion called a Shishi (獅子) .
The Shishi is a funnylooking being something like a dog wanting to be a lion. The origins of the shishi character are in China. Shishi dogs
are the equivalent of the Chinese foo dogs. Shishi were posted on the right and left entrances of temples and houses as guardians against
evil spirits. They can also be found on roofs but were often seen in pairs.
According to legend, the shishi would throw cubs off of cliffs in order to test their strength. Despite this instance of callous disregard for their
cub's health, the parents were very protective of their young.
● Skywarp
After picks up Santon, Skywarp
complains about Santon gaining weight, of which he replies with Zouni no kui sugida zou
(雑煮の
食い過ぎだぞう) or literally I ate too much rice cake soup. Using Z
ouni rice cake soup:
(雑煮) literally he's joking around because he's a Z
ou
(elephant). We’ve tried to work with this pun by adding a trunkfull (reference to an elephant's trunk) as part of the sentence.
Santon then replies back to Skywarp’s complaint with Zou mo suimasen (
ぞうもすいません) or literally I’m sorry but using Z
ou again as a
pun. We’ve tried working with this by using the word Ivory (
reference to an elephant's tusks) in place of I’m to pull off the same bad pun.
As mentioned in his character profile, Santon uses puns over and over with his sentences by emphasising zou
at the end . We’ll try
whenever appropriate to throw a bad elephant pun into his sentence.
● Before he falls into the Angolmois energy, Gigastorm yells in English, e’re not sure if this was meant to parody any kind of
“I shall return!” W
English TV shows or movies, as this line could have come from anywhere.
Episode 42: The Legendary One! The Green Warrior (伝説! 緑の戦士)
● Lio Convoy says to Lio Junior, otoninare, Lio Junior
(大人になれ、ライオジュニア!) Literally, this would come off as “Grow up, Lio
Junior!” Lio Convoy
However, the way it would be written would make one think is being harsh with his words, so we’ve softened this
sentence with
“It’s time to become an adult, Lio Junior!”
● The narrator mentions at the end of the episode the word daikouhou (大攻防) which means a great offense and defense. T his is in
reference to the offensive and defensive sides during large battles. For the sake of reading, we shortened this to
great battle.
