Some Review and Assessment:

What is something you learned through this project?

DP- I learned how to do proportions. Calculating how far a mile and a half is, and
how to read a ruler.
JBe- I learned how to read a ruler. I learned the metric stuff.

“We learned what the different types of dragons smell like in D&D.” -both

How do you get accurate measurements using a ruler? (Refer to the printed ruler
sheet) What do the different length lines mean?

DP- Math. You look at the ruler. The bigger lines are whole numbers, and the
smaller lines are ½, ¼, etc.
JBe- Math. The inches, and millimeters, and centimeters.

What are two different measuring methods you used through this project?

DP- Weight and length. Used a scale for weight, and a ruler for length. A ruler stick,
specifically.
JBe- The ruler measures inches, and the length and width. We also used the single
scale thing for measuring weight.

A Scale Drawing

Step 1: Set up your proportion Formula: scale = scale 2 in = x in

actual actual 3 ft 21 ft.
Step 2: Cross multiply and solve for x.

3x = 42 3x = 42 x = 14 inches
3 3
Example 2: The scale for your house is 2 ft:1 in, your bedroom is 16 feet wide. How
long should the drawing be?

Formula: scale = scale 1 in = x in

actual actual 2 ft 16 ft.

Cross multiply and solve for x.

2x = 16 x = 8 inches

• On a map, the scale is 1 inch:150 miles. If the map distance is 3 inches, find the actual
distance.

• Katelyn wants to build a desk for her doll. Her actual desk is 3 feet tall. The
scale is .5 in: 1 ft. How tall will the doll desk be?
