The Purepecha Tribe

What are the Purepecha


The Purepecha or the Tarascan is a tribe from Michoacan that ruled over the
Sierra Madre Mountains.
Culture
The Purepecha tribe is known for their skills in pottery, weaving and the language
of Purépecha. Their pottery was usually made from clay or dry mud with very
detailed patterns. The Purepechas weren't known for their food but they invented
the most common way to cook the dish carnitas.
Architecture
They lived in small houses made out of wood then surrounded with stone wall.
When a leader or a important figure in the tribe they build circle pyramids called
“Yacata”. The Yacata were usually made from volcanic stone. Inside the Yacata
their would be a tomb with the important figure in the middle and their jewlery
surrounding them.
Religion
The religion the Purepecha believed there was a family of gods and it was ruled by
one supreme priest. The first god is the father Kurikawei and he's the god of the
sun. The next god is the mother Kwerawaperi who is the goddess of the earth.
The last god is Xarátenga the daughter who is the god of the sea and the moon. In
order to give back to these gods they gave human sacrifices.
Economy
They Purepecha economy was based of food and weapons. The people would
trade their swords weapons and hard ores like obsidian for food like maize and
pork.
