Wednesday 1030 – 1120 MAC D110
COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course will cover methods in structural analysis, determination of internal loads
(axial, shear and bending moment diagrams) for beams and frames, an introduction to indeterminate
structural analysis; calculation of displacements; stiffness method for 2D trusses, slope-displacement and
moment distribution method for beams and frames.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of this course, students will be able to:
Recognize and analyze structural loads for various systems and their components.
Choose appropriate analytical model for structures, analyze modelled structure.
Classify 2D trusses for determinacy and stability; analyze 2D trusses by method of joints and method of sections.
Solve internal loadings and qualitatively sketch axial, shear and bending moment for beams and frames, both
determinate and indeterminate systems, locate points of inflection.
Select analysis method to determine deflections in statically determinate and indeterminate beams and frames
by various methods including double integration and conjugate beam.
Select analysis method to determine internal loading and displacements for statically determinate and
indeterminate beams and frames by various methods including slope deflection and moment distribution,
without and with sidesway.
Draw influence lines for statically determinate beams and trusses under static and moving load situations. Use
qualitative influence lines for frames to distinguish design pattern loads.
Analyze statically indeterminate 2D trusses using the stiffness method.
ASSIGNMENTS:
See Course Schedule below for due dates of assignments. Assignments are due before the start of class on the
due date. Late assignments will receive a mark of zero. Clarity of presentation and professionalism will account
for 33% of the assignment mark. Assignments must be completed on the grid paper template provided or on
grid paper of equal presentation quality.
The final grade obtained from the above marking scheme for the purpose of GPA calculation will be based on
the percentage-to-grade point conversion table as listed in the current Undergraduate Calendar.
FORMULA SHEETS
The course formula sheets handed out in class are the only formula sheets that students may use during quizzes
and exams. While minor notes may be made to the formula sheet, any sheets with extensive additional notes or
solved problems will be confiscated during assessments.
COMPUTER PROGRAMS
Computer programs play an important role in modern structural analysis. Although this is not a software
oriented course you will find it useful to have a structural analysis program to check your homework and
assignments. An easy to use, free, but excellent program is RISA-2D Educational, available at:
http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072863226/student_view0/risa_2d_software.html . The software is for
PCs only, however a MAC version is available at http://hal.cs.camosun.bc.ca/~gibbs/risa_for_mac.html .
The software will be demonstrated during the first tutorial. Please bring a laptop, with the software already
installed, to the first tutorial session.
