EE 523 FINAL EXAMS

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS. Show your complete solutions cleanly and orderly to the following set
of problems presented below. Maintain 4 decimal places in your solution and indicate the
proper units. Do not present answers in the solutions in fractions. ENCLOSE YOUR FINAL
ANSWERS IN A BOX. WRITE YOUR STUDENT NUMBER ON THE FIRST PAGE OF YOUR SOLUTION
SHEETS. PLEASE USE DARK INK SO THAT YOUR SOLUTIONS WILL BE CLEAR WHEN SCANNED.
PLEASE EMAIL THE SCANNED COPIES (FILENAME FORMAT: EE523_FE_SECTION_SURNAME) OF
YOUR SOLUTIONS DIRECTLY TO YOUR PROFESSORS USING THE FOLLOWING EMAIL ADDRESSES
NOT LATER 10PM MAY 22, 2020:

EARLY SUBMSSION EARNS ADDITIONAL POINTS, I.E., 5PM GETS 10% AND GOING DOWN BY
1% EVERY 30 MINUTES. NO ADDITIONAL POINTS FOR SUBMISSION AT 10PM AND BEYOND.
I. FAULT CALCULATIONS
1. A wye-connected 13.8kV 50MVA synchronous generator feeds Bus Bar 1 of a power system.
Bus Bar 1 is connected to Bus Bar 2 through a 60MVA 13.8kV-115kV delta-wye transformer
in series with a transmission line. The power network connected to Bus Bar 2 can be
equivalently represented by a wye-connected generator with equal positive and negative
sequences reactances. All wye points are solidly connected to ground. The percent
sequence reactances of various components are given below on 100 MVA base (not on
equipment MVA base) and respective voltage ratings:
Positive Negative Zero
Generator 20 15 5
Transformer 12 12 12
Transmission Line 30 30 50
Power Network X X 10
Use a MVA base value which is the last 3 digits of your student number and a kV base for
the generator which is the reverse of the last 2 digits of your student number, e.g., Student
Number = 2015081234, MVA base = 234, kV base at generator = 43. In the event the last 2
digits are zeros, move 2 digits to the left, e.g., SN = 2015081200, kV base at generator = 21.

a. Under no load condition, the voltage at Bus Bar 2 is 120kV and a current of 2,100A is fed
to a three-phase short circuit on Bus Bar 2. Determine the positive sequence reactance
X of the equivalent generator of the power network expressed in ohms.
b. For the same initial conditions, find the fault current for (i) single line-to-ground fault
and (ii) a double line-to-ground fault on Bus Bar 1. What are the phase voltages at the
transformer high voltage terminals and the fault current contributions of the generator
(neglect the phase shift for the delta-wye transformer)? EXPRESS YOUR ANSWERS IN
ACTUAL VALUES AND POLAR FORM.
c. Determine the size of the transformer grounding reactor (in ohms) to limit the double
line-to-ground fault current to three phase fault current at Bus 2.
II. LOAD FLOW CALCULATIONS
2) Shown below is a simple 3 bus power system. The line and bus data pertinent to the system
are also given in per unit. The reactive limits of Gen 2 are 0 to 20 MVArs. Base power used is
100 MVA. Solve the load flow problem.
Use the last 3 digits of your Student Number as the MVA base to convert the given data to
new per unit values.

Set the initial estimate of V3 = 0.980∠0° and solve the load flow problem using:
a) Gauss-Seidel up to 2nd iteration;
b) Newton Raphson up to 2nd iteration;
c) If the final power flow results in the following voltages:
𝑉𝑉1 = 1.0∠0° 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝
𝑉𝑉2 = 1.0∠0.418° 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝
𝑉𝑉3 = 0.9799∠ − 1.20° 𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝
Determine: (i) Bus Power injection at the swing bus (MW & MVAr), (ii) the line
power flows (1-2, 1-3, 2-3), in MW & MVAr, and (iii) line losses (MW & MVAr)
