• The Eastern Coastal Plains and the Western Coastal Plains both meet

at Kanniyakumari which is the southernmost tip of peninsula or


Indian mainland.
• India has an extremely long coastline which encourages fishing and
transport.
• Ships are loaded and unloaded at ports. Some of these are:
• Mumbai, Kandla, Kochi and Panaji on the western coast
• Kolkata, Puducherry and Chennai on the eastern coast
• Spoken language-Gujarati
• The Gir Forest is famous for Asiatic lion.
• The famous ‘Amul’ milk products come from Anand.
• The women wear sarees and lehangas.
• The men wear churidars and short jackets called angrakhas, with
colourful turbans.
The Konkan Coast runs through Maharashtra.
Mumbai is the capital of the state and biggest seaport in India.
The seabed off the Konkan Coast has large deposits of petroleum. The region is
called Bombay High.

centre.
Puducherry is a union territory. At one time it was ruled by the French.
The people here speak Tamil and English .
Some of them also speak French.
It is famous for the Aurobindo Ashram.
