VI. Intersubjectivity
A. Accepting Differences Among People

 Intersubjectivity – inter (between / shared) and subjectivity (influenced by personal feeling, tastes, or opinion).
 There is a psychological adage that says, “no two individuals are exactly alike”. Even twins are not exactly alike in
physical, mental, social and emotional behavior.
 Who we are determines how we view others? We look at a person differently from the rest. A difference in color
shape, and size from those that ordinarily found in the environment may likely be attended to very much perceive
differently by the perceiver.
 Who we are determines how we view life? We all have personal frame of references that consist of our attitudes,
assumptions, and expectations concerning ourselves, other people and life.
 Who we are determines what we do? The way we view people is determined by who we are- our personality and
character.

VI. Intersubjectivity
B. Accepting the Talents of Persons with Disabilities and Underprivileged

 Person with Disabilities (PWD): This term (formerly disabled persons) refers to those persons with impairment and
obstacles such as physical barriers and prevailing attitudes that prevent their participation in society.
 PWD can contribute a wide array of expertise, skills and talents.
 President Franklin D. Roosevelt –the first president with a disability, was a great advocate for the rehabilitation of
people with disabilities, but still operated under the notion that a disability was an abnormal, shameful, condition and
should be medically cured or fixed.
 The U.S Rehabilitation Act of 1973(Section 504) provides equal opportunity for employment within the federally
funded programs, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of either physical or mental disability
 Education for All Handicapped Children Act-which further elaborated on the inclusion of children with disabilities
in the educational decisions affecting children.
 Prejudice- can be defined as a previously formed judgment applied to some person, objects or situation usually in a
hostile manner without considering facts.

C. Authentic Dialogue Means Accepting Others who have Disabilities

 The rights enumerated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights would be enough to protect everyone.
 650 million people in the world are living with disabilities this is about 10 percent of the world’s population. They
encounter a many riad of physical and social obstacles that:
- Prevent them from receiving an education
- Prevent them from getting jobs, even when they are well qualified:
- Prevent them from accessing information:
- Prevent them from obtaining proper health care:
- Prevent them from getting round
- Prevent them from “fitting in” and being accepted
 The UN adopted the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Disabled Persons that have
provided policy guidelines on promoting the same opportunities to person with disabilities that others enjoy and
these served as model legislation for a number of countries.
