4. The allowance that all teenagers receive is known to be normally distributed.
100 teenagers were asked to indicate the allowance they received a week from their parents.
The results are in the table below .
(a) Find an unbiased estimate of the variance of the weekly allowance that all teenagers receive.
[2 marks]
(b) Find a 95% confidence interval for the mean weekly allowance that all teenagers receive.
[4 marks]
5. The school claims that the mean age of their students having the first handphone is 14 years. A
survey is carried out to study the ages of having the first handphone among the students in the
school. A random sample of 120 students with handphones is selected. The mean and the standard
deviation of the ages of the students having the first handphone are 15 years and 4 years
respectively.
Test at 5% significance level to determine whether the mean age of the school students having the
first handphone is more than 14 years. [7 marks]
6. A large international company employs university graduates who have Class I, II or III degrees.
After one year’s employment, the performance of 250 graduates was assessed. It was found that 32
graduates were graded A (high), 140 graduates were graded B (average) and the rest were graded C
(below average). Of these 250 graduates, 30 had class I degrees, 150 had Class II degrees and the rest
had Class III degrees. Of the graduates with Class I degrees, 8 were graded A and 14 were graded B.
Of those with Class II degrees, 21 were graded A and 70 were graded B. The rest were each graded C.
A table of the results is shown below.
Class
Total
I II III
A 8 21 3 32
Performance B 14 70 56 140
C 8 59 11 78
Total 30 150 70 250

Section B [ 15 marks ]
Answer any one question in this section.
8. A machine cuts wood to form stakes, which are supposed to be 2 metres long.
A random sample of 40 stakes is taken, the stakes are accurately measured, and their lengths (x cm)
are summarized (using a coding method with reference value 200 cm) by:
(a) Calculate unbiased estimates for the mean and variance of the stake length.
[5 marks]
(b) Determine a 95 % confidence interval for the mean stake length. [4 marks]
(c) By using the result in (b), test, at the 5% significance level, the null hypothesis that the population
mean is 2 metres against the alternative that this is not the case.
[3 marks]
(d) Find the least sample size that must be taken so that mean stake length is estimated with an error
within 0.5 cm with a confidence level of 98 %. [3 marks]
