“Jack & Jill” from children’s nursery rhymes (Psychological criticism)

"Jack and Jill" (sometimes "Jack and Gill", particularly in earlier versions) is a traditional English
nursery rhyme. The Roud Folk Song Index classifies the commonest tune and its variations as number
10266, although it has been set to several others. The original rhyme dates back to the 18th century and
different numbers of verses were later added, each with variations in the wording. Throughout the 19th
century new versions of the story were written featuring different incidents. A number of theories
continue to be advanced to explain the rhyme’s historical origin.

The earliest version of the rhyme was in a reprint of John Newbery's Mother Goose's Melody,
thought to have been first published in London around 1765. The rhyming of "water" with "after" was
taken by Iona and Peter Opie to suggest that the first verse might date from the 17th century.[3] Jill was
originally spelled Gill in the earliest version of the rhyme and the accompanying woodcut showed two
boys at the foot of the hill. As presented over the following century, the rhyming scheme of the six-line
stanzas is AABCCB and they are trochaic in rhythm. Alternatively, when given the form of internally
rhymed quatrains, this would be an example of the ballad form commonly used for nursery rhymes.

The phrase "Jack and Jill" existed earlier in England to indicate a boy and girl as a generic pair. It is
so used, for example, in the proverb "Every Jack (shall/must) have his Jill", to which there are references
in two plays by William Shakespeare dating from the 1590s. The compress of vinegar and brown paper
to which Jack resorted after his fall was a common home cure used to heal bruises.

There are several theories concerning the origin of the rhyme. Most such explanations postdate the
first publication of the rhyme and have no corroborating evidence. S. Baring-Gould suggested that the
rhyme is related to a story in the 13th-century Icelandic Gylfaginning in which the brother and sister
Hjuki and Bil were stolen by the moon while drawing water from a well, to be seen there to this day.[29]

Other suggestions rooted in history include a reference to the executions of Richard Empson and
Edmund Dudley in 1510,[30] or to a marriage negotiation conducted by Thomas Wolsey in 1514.[31]
Alternatively it has been taken to satirise the attempt by King Charles I of England to raise extra revenue
by ordering that the volume of a Jack (1/8 pint) be reduced, while the tax remained the same. In
consequence of this, the Gill (a quarter pint in liquid measure) "came tumbling after".[32]
There is also a belief in Somerset that the rhyme records events in the village of Kilmersdon when a
local girl became pregnant; the putative father is said to have died from a rockfall and the woman
afterwards died in childbirth. The local surname of Gilson is therefore taken to derive from Gill's son.

What’s more?
1. A. I should have to find a way to make my classmate stop before he caught by our teacher rather
than trying to inform because it is so bad to inform my teacher right away without thinking what
it might happen to him. If it is his/her mistake, that could be your mistake also because it is just
like that you are not willing to accept forgiveness. Being a good person should have to give
chance to others who are doing mistakes just like our parents who were always forgiving,
correcting and gives patience to us, and our God also. Remember, If we are reporting mistake
from others right away, you make them realized that there is no God who give him a chance,
and also, you make them realized that god didn’t send a good person who can guide them. I did
not mean that reporting other’s mistakes is bad. You should think it first of why you should need
to report it, what would be the possible result to him if you do that, and if the situation is a right
place.
2. A. I should have to run directly towards them, and tell to stop bully him/her and leave them
alone because to prevent the problem getting worse or to something bad to him/her. That’s the
wise move and no need to give more explanation. I should not report to others first but I will
report it after I stop them.
3. B. I should go back to my classroom directly before I am going to the toilet to report my teacher
of what I saw. It is important to inform it because not just to discipline those students, but also
to help and protect those students to avoid accidents and could also guide them to make their
future better. We know that the duty of our teacher is to teach and guide us. They could protect
us from any bad happenings just like our parents. If I never report it right away, what will might
be happen to those students? How about their future? Their safety? Their parent’s satisfaction
and worries? We should inform our teacher regarding about that happen in order to do their
duty and to protect those students.
4. B. I should bring that to the faculty room and report it as a lost and found item in order to make
that purse secured and no hassle to find out who I should return it even the owners too. I should
not bring it to someone else even he/she is trusted in order to protect that lose item from
stealing and to make it easy to the owner where should she/he find.
5. F. I should compose myself and report this incident to our teacher to inform her what was
happening and have chance to explain it that you are not intentionally do it right away. If I
pretend or find someone who can pushed you, it means that you are intentionally do it. It is just
like that you are don’t like to receive justice.

The article "Regarding the Effects of Media on the Youth" is a reflection paper written on August 25,
2017, by Allyssa M. That article talks and features about how the media makes addicted to young
Filipinos, and what would be the possible effects might able to get from it.

They are many possible side effects of media on young Filipinos. Not just mentally, but also in there
emotionally, physically, and physiologically. As the author's said, "Many teenagers spend nights without
sleep using social media in which affects their health and performance in school. Media violence has also
been increasing and may influence teens that are prone to it." Well, it is a reality. Many Filipino
teenagers are lazy in doing something valuable for themselves and to others also. Honestly, I have been
like that before that I have could almost forget the homework/school activities and assignments that I
needed to comply with it. I have almost forgotten to do something with friends, relatives, and also my
parents, such as bond and help them to do all household chores. I am quickly getting tired, stress, and
sleepy because I was always facing the phone and surfing the net overnight, which makes me easily
irritable to do or to entertain someone or everything. Too much addiction to media might change young
Filipinos into faulty behavior, just like what I have experienced. Some of us might be doing bad such as
bashing, hacking, and others if there is no someone can watch over them.

Well, that article makes us realized that almost all of us are media abuse, I think. Filipinos could relate to
this article because the content involves those detrimental effects mention by the author and makes us
realized that we might be regretting something if we are always facing the internet all the time. Such as
our future, the time we wasted, and others.

That article should not be considered as a "reflection essay" only. But also, it could be a persuasive
essay. It embodies important, inspirational, and life-changing lessons for us Filipino youth who were
media users. That article should be part of the curriculum of both college and high school students. And
also, should be included as a featured news article to makes us and as well those students to be
reminded or realized that we have something fun and needed to do rather than using media always. We
should be responsible for using media and do it with purpose as well.

My reaction paper about “how to train the dragon.

How to train your dragon is a story of adventure, friendship, family, and getting to know oneself. It
started off with the main character, Hiccup Horrendous, the son of Stoick the village chief, narrating the
life in Berk – an island twelve days north of Hopeless, and a few degrees south of Freezing to Death,
located solidly on the Meridian of Misery, infested by dragons. Many would have flee the village, but not
them – they’re Vikings. Hiccup is faced with competing with other Vikings, in proving himself capable of
slaying a dragon, and to take on the role of village chief in the near future. But such feat proves to be
quiet impossible for the young hero who lacks confidence and physical strength. But all these changed in
one night when dragons attacked Berk and he caught among the usual dragons, a rare dragon of
incredible strength and speed, a Night Fury. Hiccup was determined to kill the dragon to prove his
worth. Upon seeing the bounded helpless creature, he showed pity and let the dragon free. This started
their friendship – of Hiccup proving himself, and understanding dragons; and Toothless, the Night Fury,
learning to trust humans. The film ended with dragons and humans getting along after defeating the
Alpha dragon whom enslaves the other dragons to bring him food.

I agree on what hiccup had done. When he decided to free toothless instead of dealing the final blow.
Killing toothless would have raise his reputation among his fellow Vikings, especially his father but he
decided to spare toothless’ life and try to understand how dragons do what they do. He made a friend
out of an enemy that his ancestors have been fighting for thousands of years.
It tells us that we should not always rely on the norm of the people around us and that we should have
our own perspective in dealing with other people. Because it doesn’t mean that if most people are doing
it, it means that it’s right.

For me, the movie did a great job because it shows the characteristics of a film that most people are
looking for and that it has a good plot twist and a satisfying ending. Overall I can rate it 8-10 for doing a
great job.
