H ad the performers of the m ind and


memory entertainm ent known as m ental
telepathy continued to give their perform ­
ance as a m ental conjuring act, this book
would not have been w ritten. B u t u n fo r­
tunately, in recent years, claims to super­
n atural and mystic powers have been made
by the performers. Spiritualistic mediums
have learned the business, and use it to gull
their foolish votaries, although I have
w ritten m any newspaper and magazine
articles on the subject. This is the first
time the fu ll revelations of the “telepathic”
stunt w ith its m any codes has been made.
Learning the codes is not only interesting
and amusing. I t is better than any memory
tra in in g course. Reading the book w ill
also prove how easy it is to deceive even
the best investigators.

As the performer in the audience fires the ques­
tions, the blindfolded medium on the stage cor­
rectly gives the answers to the bewilderment of
MJBUC

the members of the audience, many of whom be­


lieve in the claims of the entertainers giving the
performance to be prophets, clairvoyants, and to
be gifted with second sight, able to read the past
and foretell the future. The claim is nothing more
than a showman’s claim, there being nothing
either mysterious or supernatural about the per­
formance. It is no more difficult than learning a
foreign language. In fact the A.B.C. of Tele­
pathy can be mastered by any school boy or girl
in less than five minutes. Without turning to the
complete codes which I give in the following pages
to show how simple it is, take the number 1 to 6.
Supposing these numbers were written down by a
member of the audience. The performer in the

audience asking the question of the blindfolded


medium inserts the code word in the question as
follows:—

Observe the first word used in the question con­
tains the same number of letters as the number
asked for from the medium. Telepathy? Sec­
ond sight? Prophetic vision? The whole struc­
ture of Mental Telepathy or Though Transfer­
ence, by whatever name it is called, is built up on
an extension of about 30 simple words.
Of course many will say: “But all this trickery
is not Telepathy and the fact that there is trick­
ery does not prove the non-existence of Tele­
pathy.” Agreed. But there has never yet been
a public demonstration of Telepathy or a demon­
stration of Telepathy under test conditions with­
out collusion, without trickery. It was by the
way of Trick Telepathy that Sir Oliver Lodge
came to believe in Spiritualism, according to an

article contributed by him to the “Strand Maga­


zine.”
It was after witnessing a performance of Trick
Telepathy that the late Mr. W. T. Stead wrote in
the “Review of Reviews” (December, 1906) “I
can say without hesitation the performance gave
a more conclusive demonstration of the power of
Telepathy than is to be found in all the literature
on the subject. It was to a couple of American
performers of Trick Telepathy (ex-teachers in a
school for palmists) that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
recently gave a public testimonial regarding their
powers.
There is £1000 and immortal fame waiting for
the first demonstrator to give an exhibition of
Real Telepathy. The cash reward was first
offered in August, 1911, by advertisement in the
London “Times.” I give the advertisement as it
appeared.

“The sum of £1000 has during the past six '
months been offered privately to the leading
authorities and writers of repute on this-subject
for satisfactory proofs of so-called thought-
transference, but not one single case could be
found and it has now been decided to advertise
publicly for the particulars required. Persons
applying to the undersigned are requested to
name their own terms for evidence that will stand
cross-examination, and to state whether or not
their communica/ions are to be treated as confi­
dential.

It will be observed that the first six code words


contain the same number of letters as the corre­
sponding number.
These 10 code words and the numbers they re­
present can be memorised in a few minutes, after
which it is possible for any two readers to give a
demonstration of Telepathy and correctly de­
scribe any number or numbers or tell the date on
any coin. For Rehearsal purposes get a third
person to write down various numbers or dates as
the rehearsal proceeds.
(a) For 1900 dates the performer inserts the
word just in the question instead of
giving the code words for 19.
(b) For 1800 dates. It can be assumed that
all dates are 1800 dates if the word just
for 1900 is not in the question. Of
course the ordinary code words can be
used for both centuries dates as is done
for the dates of earlier centuries, but the
above simplifies the question.
(c) When two figures are the same following
each other, use the word next which in

The last question can be asked while the per­
former is descending from the balcony to the
area of the hall, the intervening time being taken
up by the laughter of the audience. It also
serves to put the audience in a good humour as
if you can raise a laugh the success of the per­
formance is assured,

During the period when my daughter and I
were giving entertainments for the Red Cross,
she visited the play “Are You a Mason?” On
the next occasion that I gave her the code word
for the Masonic Society. Instead of saying
“Masonic,” she surprised me by asking, “How old
is your mother?” a reply that so convulsed
those who had seen the play and the Masonic
brethren present that we made it a feature of
future entertainments.

When I first compiled a Telepathycode I had
every article numbered and demonstratedwith
REVELATIONS

Code I., but this was a fearful tax on the memory


as the code ran into over twenty thousand
articles. One night I was endeavouring to think
out how to simplify it. My wife was teaching
one of the children the alphabet, when I suddenly
thought there are only 26 letters in the alphabet.
The solution was so simple. A code word for
each letter, and anything in the world, no matter
how uncommon, could be described. W ith this
code I have described a shark's tooth, a serpent’s
skin, a sea hedgehog, Maundy money among
many thousands of uncommon articles. The un­
necessary letters can be omitted and with practice
the word shortened.

SILENT CODES.
There are several methods of demonstrating
“Telepathy” by what is known as Silent Codes.
That is the performer does not speak, but simply
points to the article to be described or uses one
word this. The most successful method is by the
actions and different postures of the performer,
who, before the performance begins, usually in­
forms the audience that the success of the
“seance” depends upon strict silence, and while
he is amongst the audience no one must speak to
Vnm or the mental connection between the medium
and himself would be broken. This allows him
to select the articles he requires, as naturally
with the silent method the codes are not so com­
plete as with oral codes. To explain it briefly,
the medium is not blindfolded, although she ap­
pears to be, and the audience is not allowed to
investigate the matter. The first posture of the
performer informs the medium of the nature of

the article, i.e., article of clothing, a pieca of


jewellery, a smoker’s requisite, something belong­
ing to stationery,, a number or date, a colour, a
card, etc., etc. Now the performer can stand
with heels together in eight different positions,
facing N., S., E., W., N.E., S.E., N.W., and S.W.,
which gives eight postures, or codes. He can
also stand heels together in the same positions
with right hand half up the body, which now
gives 16 codes. Also with right hand in trou­
sers pocket, which now gives 24 codes. Right
hand in jacket pocket (you will notice a performer
of silent telepathy wears a dinner jacket, not an
evening coat), which gives 32 codes. The same
positions with the left hand brings the codes up
to 56. Then there are the same 56 codes with
the right foot forward, and a further 56 with the
left foot forward, a total of 168 codes. When the
medium has stated the nature of the article to be
described (such as: “That is a packet of ciga­
rettes you have there”), the performer assumes
a second posture, which informs the medium of
the name of the cigarette. The medium then
gives its name. And the performer adopts an­
other posture which conveys the number of ciga­
rettes in the packet, which is also correctly given
by the medium. It is very impressive, and was
proclaimed by scientists and members of the
Psychical Research Committee as Real Telepathy
until investigators desired to impose test condi­
tions. The audience does not observe the per­
former's different postures as he is always deal­
ing with different members of the audience, and
the postures look as if he were turning from one
to another.
Another method of silent Telepathy is to have
a series of common articles to be found in any

audience memorised, and the performer touches


each in rotation. To keep in unison-the perfor­
mer mentally counts five from the time the
medium gives her answer until he touches
another article, while the medium counts
10 from the time she has given her
answer before she gives her next answer.
I successfully worked a silent telepathic
stunt for over two years, my daughter
acting as medium (by the way we always gave
our entertainment in the sweet cause of charity)
when my daughter was only 10 years old. She
raised over £800 for the British Red Cross in this
manner). Although I announced at each perfor­
mance that it was trickery, it was never dis­
covered, although the smartest detectives, inves­
tigators, scientists and newspaper men in the
United Kingdom tried to fathom it, until I dis­
closed the secret in a newspaper article (I think
it was the "Sunday Mail,” Glasgow) in 1920. The
method was as follows:—I invited members of
the audience to blindfold my daughter, which
they did. I then asked a committee from the
audience to mount the platform. Next I in­
formed the audience that as many of them as
• wished could put down numbers on a piece of
paper, which the committee would add up, then
my daughter would give the answer when they
had indicated that the sum had been added up.
I did not speak all the time the numbers were
being put down. Yet my daughter was never
wrong in her answers. How simple is the expla­
nation—a sleight of hand trick. The substitu­
tion of a previously prepared sum which I handed
to the committee instead of the one put down by
the audience.

LONG DISTANCE TELEPATHY.

I completely hoodwinked the staff of a leading


British newspaper and an investigating commit­
tee drawn from almost every profession, also
later on the Glasgow Branch of the Institute of
Journalists with a long distance "Telepathic”
stunt (i.e. the performer and the medium were
miles from each other).
I had been challenged regarding a statement
I had made in one of my lectures dealing with
the number of highly intellectual and learned
men who had been duped and tricked by Spirit­
ualistic and Telepathic mediums. I had stated
that it was almost impossible for the man of
high intelligence to bring his mind down to the
; level of the trickster, and that the more intelli-
: gent the audience the easier it was to gull them.
: The long distance Telepathy was to prove my

r] I explained what I was about to do was a very
? simple trick and required absolutely no memory
work of memorising on my part. I requested
that a new pack of cards be secured. A messen­
ger was sent to purchase a pack. I then informed
them that no matter what card was selected, if
they rang up a ’phone number, which I would
write down before the selection of the card, the
medium at the other end of the ’phone would
correctly describe the card.
W riting down the 'phone number before the
cayd was selected prevented thein from arriving

at the conclusion that I had a different ’phone


number with a friend there representing each
card in the pack.
The committee delegated one of their number
to do the ’phone ringing and requested him to go
outside the room during the selection of the card
so that even he would not know which card it was
until he heard from the medium.
I wrote down the 'phone number.
The pack was shuffled, I taking no part in the
shuffling. The card was drawn (the 9 of spades)
and held up for all to see. The member dele­
gated to ’phone was called into the room. The
'phone number was handed to him. Immediately
he was connected he turned round and said, “I
am instructed to say the card selected was the 9
of spades. I was asked for an explanation. I
temporarily refused. I was asked to repeat the
trick. I did so. Another person being delegated
to do the 'phone ringing. This time I wrote down
a trunk line call. The card selected was the joker,
which was described correctly by the medium
many miles away. I told the committee I would
give them the solution of the trick in a month,
meantime asking them, either jointly or sepa­
rately, to try and find the solution. A descrip­
tion was given in the press of the “seance,” prizes
were offered for the correct solution. I was in­
vited to an evening of the Institute of Journalists
to repeat the performance. I might here add that
no one came within miles of the proper solution.
I asked as many of the committee as cared to
write down their impressions of the performance,
detail the different portions, and explain fully my

contained at least two clues to the solution.
Here let me give the solution. I provided
Beveral friends in different parts of the country
with a code of 54 names, each name representing
a card including the blank card in a new pack.
(None of the code names by the way were the
same as the names of my friends.) These names
were arranged alphabetically to expedite the
“Telepathy.”
Observe I wrote the ’phone number down be­
fore the card was selected, but not the name of
the person to be asked for, and in handing the
’phone number to the member delegated in the
first instance I simply said “Ask Mr. Saunders
to speak.” When my friend at the other end of
the 'phone (whose real name by the way was
Young) heard the name Saunders, he simply
looked down the prepared list of names and found
that Saunders meant the 9 of spades. This
entailed no memory work on my part as inside
my watch case I had in miniature writing the
same code arranged according to the cards, so
that when the 9 of spades was selected I, appar­
ently to see the time, looked at my watch and
found that the 9 of spades meant Saunders. The
same proceedure being adopted with the trunk
call. I received in all 23 impressions, and not one
of them mentioned the fact that I had twice
looked at my watch, or that I had not given the
name of the person to be asked for before the
selection of the card. The telephone number put
them off that scent. By the way there are three
other methods by which this trick _can be
accomplished. Think them out. It will be as
good as a course of Pelmanism.
KEVELAtiONS

HYPNOTISM AND TELEPATHY.


Unlike Telepathy, Hypnotism has been proved,
and to-day occupies no mean place in medi­
cal science. In fact every member of the
medical faculty practices the power of suggestion
in a more or less degree. When I say Hypnotism
has been proved, I do not mean the show Hypno­
tism of the vaudeville stage, which, like Tele­
pathy, is trickery. I have not the space in this
little book to give an academic treatise on Hypno­
tism, Mesmerism, or Animal Magnetism and the
abnormal conditions of coma, somnambulism,
ecstasy, trances, etc., caused by its application.
I introduce the subject merely to point out that
the performances of Telepathy are not given by
its aid as were that the case there never would
be any mistakes on the part of the medium, and
the performer could change his medium at will
instead of having to “rest” during the indisposi­
tion of the medium. While on the subject of
Hypnotism, let me say that the greatest Hypno­
tist I ever met was the late “General” William
Booth. In handling and hypnotising an audience
he was unequalled even by Mr. Lloyd George.

same extent use it in the welfare of man as did
he who founded a world-wide organisation
preaching and practising practical Christianity—
