Potential Earthquake Hazards and Its Effects

Activity 1: NAME THAT QUAKE

1. Write specific impacts or effects of earthquake hazards based on descriptions from

stories downloaded, read news articles, watched video clippings or from descriptions
of the adults interviewed. Identify at least 10.
2013 Bohol and Cebu Earthquake
 At least 93 people have been reported dead.
 Several buildings and infrastructure were damaged including historic churches,
roads and bridges.
 The earthquake had caused stampede resulting to loss of lives and injuries.
 “There was panic when the quake happened and there was a rush toward the
exit”- resident survivor
 Dozens of others are also being treated for injuries
1990 Luzon Earthquake
 The magnitude 7.7 earthquake caused massive destruction that killed more than
1,000 people around Luzon with Baguio suffering the most devastating effects.
 Victims who did not die in the collapse were found dead later from dehydration
because they were not pulled out in time.
 All types of buildings, including several resort hotels in Baguio, known as the
Philippines’ Summer Capital, suffered tremendous damage.
 Most of the city’s 100,000 residents slept outdoors that evening and during the
following week, afraid to return to their homes amid the frequent aftershocks.
 At Christian College, a six-story building completely collapsed, trapping
approximately 250 students and teachers inside.
 Rescue efforts were hampered severely because the three main roads into the
city were blocked by landslides.

2. An earthquake is a natural phenomenon that brings havoc to beings around the
world. One major reason why earthquake is deadly is because of its unpredictable
forthcoming. Hence, these major earthquakes experienced such as Bohol and Cebu
Earthquake, and 1990 Luzon earthquake are being remembered by residents due to
the major impacts it leaves, which change their lives forever.

Activity 2: SHAKEN TO THE CORE!

1. Ground Shaking
2. Ground Rupture
3. Tsunami
4. Liquefaction
5. Earthquake- induced Landslide

Activity 4.PRINTED QUAKES!

 Buildings swaying- ground shaking

 Large cracks forming in roads- ground rupture
 Collapsed building- ground shaking
 Airport was seriously damaged and at least two buildings were destroyed- ground
shaking

Activity 5: WHAT CAN I DO?

Earthquake-Related hazard Yes No

Ground Rupture (only if a fault passes through my home) (Note: This will be

important for areas with known presence of faults)
Ground shaking ✓
Liquefaction (Note: only for areas near rivers and coastal areas underlain by soft

sediments or water-saturated materials)
Earthquake-induced landslide (if my home is near/ at the base or on the slope of a

mountain side)
Tsunami (if my home is near the coast) ✓

REFLECTION:
1. I learned the different earthquake-related hazards that occur around the world and
also its impacts during its forthcoming.
2. I enjoyed most on searching on the different news articles on the unforgettable
major earthquakes that happened in the Philippines
3. I want to learn more on the various ways on how we can mitigate the impacts of
these hazards.
