DEFINITONS

Plagiarism: is the act of copying someone else's work and publishing it as your own. This

includes text, media and even ideas. [https://techterms.com/definition/plagiarism]

According to Electronic Document Preparation and Management for CSEC By Howard

Campbell & Olivene Bogle-Graham, Plagiarism is the use of someone’s intellectual property

without properly acknowledging the source.

Copyright: is the right to prevent others from copying all or substantially all of a "work" in

which copyright subsists. [http://www.jurisdiction.com/itcopy.htm]

According to Electronic Document Preparation and Management for CSEC By Howard

Campbell & Olivene Bogle-Graham, Copyright is a property right which may exist in the

following categories of work: original literary, dramatic, musical and sound recordings etc.
PLAGIARISM

Many people think of plagiarism as copying another's work or borrowing someone else's original

ideas. But terms like "copying" and "borrowing" can disguise the seriousness of the offense:

According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, to "plagiarize" means:

 to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own

 to use (another's production) without crediting the source

 to commit literary theft

 to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source

In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and

lying about it afterward.

SYMBOL OF COPYRIGHT

A copyright symbol is used to indicate that somebody legally owns the rights to make and

distribute copies of a particular work. Generally, you'll see a circle "C" copyright symbol on

works such as TV shows, websites and books. For sound recordings, you might see a "P" in a

circle rather than the "C" symbol, although the meaning is roughly the same.
PERSON AFFECTED BY

COPYRIGHT
Some person affected by copyright is:

 Producers or owners: are persons who own the material. The producers/owners of the

material will obtain financial reward from anyone who published their work.

 Publishers or distribution: are persons who make legal agreement with producers to

used their work. The agreement seeks to secure financial reward for both the producer

and the publisher.

 Consumers: are persons who can access and use the work of the copyright owner. Their

must acknowledge the source of work/information or seek permission from producer

through the publisher. A fee may be charged for the use of the work.
PREVENTION OF PLAGIARISM

AND COPYRIGHT

Some ways to prevent plagiarism and copyright are:

 Read the source documents and make notes in your own words

 Use the information to develop your own ides

 Use several different sources of information rather than relying on one or two texts

 Acknowledge the source of any ideas, opinions or theories that are not your own

 Indicate when you are quoting or paraphrasing another person’s words

 State the source of any piece of information that are not common knowledge including

graphs and charts.
