TRANSCRIPT OF INTERVIEW

Good day! Allow us first to introduce ourselves. We are Christian John Saludar and Aline
V. Jacolo and we are Third Year BS-Civil Engineering students of the University of the
Immaculate Conception. Currently, we are taking up the course Principles of
Transportation Engineering and as part of our TLA, we are asked to interview someone
working in the transportation industry. This interview will enlighten us on the necessity of
transportation, the trends in the transportation industry and possible encourage us to
focus on transportation engineering as our work in the future.

Before anything else, I would like to ask for your consent sir/maam to conduct this
interview and utilize your answer for our TLA and your preferred language to be utilized.

I, (Sgd.) Sebastian Seth S Cabahug, allow the aforementioned individuals to utilize my

answers for there TLA.

(Sgd.) Sebastian Seth S. Cabahug

Signature over Printed Name

Thank you so much! First and foremost we would like to ask basic information about you:
Name: Sebastian Seth S. Cabahug
Profession: Civil Engineer
Employer: DPWH RO XI
Address of the Employer: R. Magsaysay Ave., Corner Gov. Chavez St., Davao City
Years of Service: 1+

We would like to ask you the following questions related to your profession and our
subject of study: transportation sector. We are asking you to answer the questionnaire in
any way convenient for you (statements, bullet, phrases, etc.)

1. What was the course you finished during your college years and from what school?
BS in Civil Engineering, University of the Immaculate Conception

2. Given your course, did you see yourself to be working in the transportation
industry? If yes, why? If no, how did you reach your present job in the
transportation industry?
Having enrolled in Pre-K-12 Curriculum, there was no certainty as to where or in
what field of civil engineering I’ll be headed so NO. After I passed my board exam,
I applied for work at DPWH RO XI which of course is the agency tasked with the
construction of all public works, including roads.

3. Was this your first job or were there other jobs you performed that were still related
to transportation? Can you give us an idea of those jobs?
This is my first job. The majority of jobs related to transportation is really the
planning and design of transportation systems that include highway, roads,
drainage structures, ports and harbors, airports, and railways.

4. Being in your present position right now, what are the tasks you usually perform at
present?
I am a site engineer in the construction division of DPWH RO XI. Although I am
not from the planning and design division, whenever there are changes from the
original plan of a particular project, we make shop drawings and make as-staked
plans, revised plans and as built plans, among countless other tasks related to
project implementation.

5. What problems do you currently face in the performance of your work?

A lot Well, in each and every project you will encounter unique problems right
from the start (and along the way) until the project’s completion. Some challenges
I have encountered are excessive rainfall/flooding that will result to collapse of
structure(super specific lol), highly technical engineering works, and (sometimes)
uncooperative contractors, to name a few.

6. What problems do your agency or company currently face? Especially in terms of

transportation?
Corruption(crashed out). As mentioned above, sometimes problems from highly
technical projects are complicated as well that’s why inspection is extensive and
testing is very thorough, and this takes a lot of time, which can be a reason for
suspension of works altogether and therefore the delayed completion of the
project.

7. What trends do you see in your field? (Demands, projects, innovations, etc.)
The number of projects has significantly increased due to Duterte administration’s
build, build, and building program and will remain until a couple of years from now.
If and when the next elected president (of the Philippines) continues the building,
building building then more infrastructure projects will be made and more jobs
available for all that will help in the growth of our economy.

8. Do you think the transportation industry will still become a necessity in the future?
Yes. As compared to wealthier countries, our transportation system is not yet up
to par with theirs. Time will come that we will continue to develop our transportation
system with skyways, highspeed trains, subways, world class harbors, and
renowned airports. There is so much to envision and so much more to improve, to
improve the daily lives of Filipinos.

We thank you so much for your time and honest answers to the questions. Surely, those
will aid us not only in finishing this TLA, but will be a basis for us when the time comes if
we are asked to pursue a transportation career or not.

Thank you! `
Chapter 3
SALIENT POINTS OF THE INTERVIEW

POINTS TO CONSIDER

I. The initial idea of the interviewee to work for a transportation-related office

a. Given that the curriculum which he underwent in college did not allow him
to choose what particular field of Civil Engineering he will be focusing on
(like that of the recent curriculum for BS-Civil Engineering), he did not have
any idea that he will land in an office related to transportation. It was only
when he applied for the job in the office when he realized he will be working
on transportation.

II. Jobs the interviewee perform

a. The majority of his jobs about transportation were about planning and
design of infrastructures related to transportation like the design of roads
and highways. In doing so, he is tasked with making drawings, revised
plans, and as-built plans which are necessary during project implementation

III. Problems encountered in the job he performs

a. Excessive rainfall/flooding causing structural collapse
b. Highly technical engineering works requiring highly technical skills and
analysis
c. Uncooperative contracts
d. Corruption (in the place of work)
e. The delayed accomplishment of projects

IV. Trends in the transportation sector

a. Provided that the interviewee is on the design of roads and highways, the
trend he highlighted was the increase in infrastructure project due to the
build, build, building program of the present administration
b. More jobs will be available for workers especially in the construction of
transportation facilities

V. The necessity of the transportation industry

a. There will still be numerous improvements in the transportation industry
which is essential to improve the daily lives of the Filipinos.

MAJOR TAKE AWAY

After the conduct of the interview, the proponents were able to realize, internalize,
and grasped the following takeaways:
• There are various problems the transportation industry is currently facing (even
though we have only seen the problem in the design process). These problems, if
not answers, will delay development, deteriorate the transportation system rather
than improve, and will hinder total development.
• Transportation is very important as it does not only transport people and goods
from one point to another, but it also employs people especially in the construction
industry which aids in the rate of unemployment as well as aid in the economic
growth of the country. Hence, the transportation industry will and will always
remain to be a significant factor in our society.
• We, as future Civil Engineers, must seek to be part of the solution than the
problem. We should not accept the current situation, but rather seek to change it
for the better.
