Weekly Journal - Capstone Project

Progress I have made during this past week:

(Don’t forget to provide a breakdown of time spent on each item listed)
● I met with Stacy via a Zoom meeting and practiced establishing and maintaining a
conversation in ASL - 30 minutes
● I practiced reading fingerspelling (online tool) - 30 minutes
● I continued putting together my final presentation (e.g adding information & creating slides for
my goals, my process, etc.) - 1 hour
● I continued to learn ASL through the online lessons (I completed 5 lessons in total) - 6 hours

What I need to move forward with my Capstone (time, space, materials, contacts):
● I will need to complete putting together my final presentation
● I will have to meet again with Stacy via a Zoom meeting and continue to practice establishing
and maintaining a conversation in ASL
● Throughout the upcoming week, I will have to spend 4-5 hours to continue to complete my
ASL lessons
● I will have to continue to practice reading fingerspelling using the online tool

Obstacles I have encountered and how I’ve moved forward:

● As mentioned, I did meet up with Stacy via a Zoom meeting to practice establishing and
maintaining a conversation in ASL
○ But, honestly speaking, it was difficult for me to keep up with the fast-paced signing
(especially the fingerspelling)
■ Thus, during the Zoom meeting, I had to kindly ask Stacy if she could slow
down a bit
■ I did expect myself to have some difficulty with this because it had been a
long time since I had last attempted to have a full conversation in ASL
● But, at the same time, I thought I would have been better at reading
Stacy’s fast-paced fingerspelling
○ To be fair, Stacy did mention that reading fast-paced fingerspelling is a skill that is not
easily obtained
■ It’s very common for people learning ASL to struggle with this
○ Stacy suggested to practice with a pretty neat online tool
■ This tool fingerspells words and you must be able to correctly read the word
■ The neat thing is that you can adjust the speed of the fingerspelling
depending on your level of learning
● I have already started practicing with this, and I am hoping that by
our next meeting, I will feel more comfortable with faster-paced
fingerspelling

Obstacles I can foresee in my next steps:

● This upcoming week, I am going to really have to manage my time effectively and maintain
my focus throughout the week
○ There are many deadlines coming up fast for my Capstone project, both of my
academic courses, and for post-secondary/scholarship applications
■ It’s definitely a very stressful and difficult time
● But, I am hoping that by creating schedules, using my planner,
avoiding distractions, and maintaining a positive-mindset, I will be
able to meet these major deadlines and overcome any obstacles in
my way
The skills I’ve used and what I’ve learned:
● This week, I learned that it’s very important to ask for feedback and advice from others
○ After concluding our conversation in ASL, I asked Stacy if she could provide
advice/tips
■ I was able to receive constructive feedback about my signing and tools to
utilize so that I can further improve in some specific areas
○ I was also using my active listening skills by giving full attention to what Stacy was
saying and by taking the time to understand the feedback she gave

My goals and deadlines for next week:

● By Friday, January 22, 2021, complete three more ASL lessons
● By Saturday, January 23, 2021, complete putting together the final presentation
● On Saturday, January 23, 2021, I will meet again with Stacy to continue practice establishing
and maintaining a conversation in ASL
● Continue to practice reading fingerspelling using the online tool
● Continue to create schedules, use my planner, and avoid distractions to ensure that I
efficiently organize and use my time

My evidence of progress. This can include but is not limited to: diagrams, screenshots,
photos, videos, rough drafts, schedules, meeting notes, mind maps, etc.
