LECTURE 1 General Term
Binomial Expression

Any algebraic expression which contains two dissimilar

terms is called binomial expression.
We already know Binomial Expansion !!

1. (a+b)0

2. (a+b)1

3. (a+b)2

4. (a+b)3

5. (a+b)4
Pascal’s Triangle
Factorial !

Factorial of natural number ‘n’ is product of first n natural

numbers.

5! = 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1

n! = n x (n-1) x (n-2) …… 3 x 2 x 1

Important Results:

1. 0! = 1
2. n! = n x (n-1)!
nC
r : New operator / function

Selection of ‘r’ objects out of ‘n’ available distinct objects.

Pascal’s Triangle using nCr
Expansion using nCr

1. (a+b)0

2. (a+b)1

3. (a+b)2

4. (a+b)3

5. (a+b)4
Binomial
Expansion
Binomial Expansion:

(x+y)n =

nC
0x
n-0 y0 + nC1 xn-1 y1 + nC2 xn-2 y2 + ……… + nCr xn-r yr + ……. + nCn-1 xyn-1 + nCn x0 yn
Binomial Expansion:

(x-y)n =
Example The value of (√2 + 1)6 + (√2 - 1)6 will be

A. -198 B. 198 C. 98 D. -99

Example If (1 + ax)n = 1 + 8x + 24x2 + …… then find ‘a’ and ‘n’.
Binomial Expansion (x + y)n:

1. The number of terms in the expansion is n + 1.

2. The sum of the indices of x and y in each term is n.

3.
The binomial coefficients (nCO, nC1, …… nCn) of the terms
equidistant from the beginning and the end are equal, i.e.
nC = nC , nC = nC
n-1 etc. {∵ Cr = Cn-r}
n n

If the 4th term in the expansion of (px + x-1)m is 2.5 for all x ∈ R
Example
then
A. p = 5/2, m = 3 B. p = 1/2, m = 6
C. p = -1/2, m = 6 D. None of these
