Subject-Verb Agreement
Concept Notes:
Subjects and verbs must agree with one another in number (singular or plural). Thus, if a subject
is singular, its verb must also be singular. If a subject is plural, its verb must also be plural.
These are some rules on subject-verb agreement:
1. The pronoun “YOU” always takes a plural verb.
Example: You sing so well.
2. If two subjects, one singular and one plural, are connected by EITHER/OR or NEITHER/ NOR, the
verb agrees with the nearer subject.
Example: Neither the athletes nor the coach is going.
Either the teacher or the learners are joining.
3. Singular subjects joined by AND require a plural verb, except when they mean one thing.
Example: John and Mary are reading novels.
My mother and mentor supports me.
