Q1. Determine the total compression of the bar in Fig. 1 Take Es=210 GPa,
Eb=105 GPa and Ec= 100 GPa.

Q2. A load of 800 kN is applied to a reinforced concrete column of 560 mm diameter


which has four steel rods of 36 mm diameter embedded in it. Determine the stress
in the concrete and the steel. Take E for steel= 210 GPa and E for concrete =
15GPa. Also find the adhesive force between the concrete and steel.
Q3. A bar 12 mm in diameter is acted upon by an axial load of 20 kN. The change in
diameter is measured as 0.003 mm. determine:
a. Poisson’s ratio
b. The modulus of elasticity and the bulk modulus.
The Value of modulus of rigidity is 80 GPa.
Q4. A metallic prismatic specimen is subjected to an axial stress of σx and on one
pair of sides no constraint is exerted whereas on the other, the lateral strain is
restricted to one half of the strain which would be there in the absence of any
constraint. Show that the modified modulus of elasticity will be [2E/ (2-υ2)].
Q5. A prismatic bar is stretched in such a way that all the lateral strain is prevented.
Find the value of the modified modulus of elasticity. What will be the modified
Poisson’s ratio?
Q6. An axial load of 56 kN is applied to a bar of 36 mm diameter and 1 m length.
The extension of the bar is measured to be 0.265 mm whereas the reduction in
diameter is 0.003 mm. calculate poison’s ratio and the value of the three moduli.
Q7. The stress at a point in three coplanar directions are measured as σ0= 80 MPa
(tensile), σ60= 400 MPa (tensile) and σ120= 200 MPa (Compressive). Where
subscripts indicate the relative angular position of the planes in degree.
Determine the principal stresses and the planes.

Q8. The reading of a strain gauge rosette inclined at 450 with each other are 4x10^-
6, 3x 10-6 and 1.6x10-6, the first gauge being along x-axis. Determine the
principal strains and the planes.
Q9. The resultant stress on a plane BC at a point in a material is 240 MPa tensile
inclined at 300to the normal to the plane as shown in fig. on a plane AB
perpendicular to plane BC, the normal component of stress is 180 MPa. Determine:
a. Resultant stress on plane AB
b. Principal stress and principal planes
c. Maximum shear stress.

Q10. Deduce expression for stresses on an inclined plane in a body subjected to a bi-
axial stress condition.
Q11. A piece of material is subjected to two perpendicular tensile stresses of 300 MPa
and 150 MPa. Determine the normal and shear stress components on a plane, the
normal of which makes an angel of 400 with the 300 MPa stress. Also, find the
resultant.
Q12. A solid shaft transmits 200 kW of power at 80 rpm. Determine the diameter of
the shaft if the shear stress is not to exceed 75 MPa. If this shaft is replaced by a
hollow shaft whose internal diameter is 0.6 of the external diameter while the
length, material and maximum shear stress are the same. Find the percentage
saving in weight.
Q13. A compound shaft is made by mounting a gun metal sleeve on a steel shaft. The
shaft is subjected to a torque in such a way that the torque on the sleeve is twice
that on the shaft. Determine the ratio of external diameter of the sleeve to that of
the shaft. What will be the torque transmitted by the compound shaft if the steel
shaft diameter is 56 mm and the limiting value of the shear stress in the gun metal
and the steel are 50 MPa and 85 MPa respectively? Gst = 2.4 Ggm.
Q14. A Steel shaft ABC is of 150 mm diameter over a length of AB=3 m and of
100 mm diameter over a length of BC=1.5 m. at B, a clockwise torque of 45

kNm and at C, a counter clockwise torque of 15 kNm is applied. If the shaft is in


equilibrium, determine:
a. The maximum shear stress in the shaft
b. Angle of twist of B with respect to A
c. Angle of twist of C with respect to A. G= 80 GPa.
Q15. A 1 mm long shaft tapers uniformly from a diameter of 80 mm to a diameter of
120 mm. determine the angle of twist and the maximum shear stress induced if
the shaft transmits a torque of 10 kNm, G= 82 GPa.
Q16. The specimen shown is made from a 24-mm diameter cylindrical steel rod with
two 36-mm outer diameter sleeves bonded to the rod as shown:
Knowing that E=200Gpa, determine: (a) the load P so that the total deformation
is 0.04 mm, (b) the corresponding deformation of central portion BC.

Q17. A 250 mm bar of 15×30 mm rectangular cross section consists of two aluminium
layers, 5 mm thick, brazed to a centre brass layer of the same thickness. If it is
subjected to centric forces of magnitude P=30kN and knowing that Ea=70 GPa
and Eb= 105 GPa, determine that normal stress:
(a) In the aluminium layer, (b) in the brass layer.

Q18. The aluminium shell is fully bonded to the brass core and the assembly is
unstressed at a temperature of 150C. Considering only axial deformations,
determine the stress in the aluminium when the temperature reaches 1950C.

Q19. Solve the Q. 18 by assuming that the core is made of Steel (Es=200 GPa,
αs=11.7×10-6/0C) instead of brass.
Q20. Knowing that a 0.5 mm gap exists when the temperature is 240C, determine:
(a) The temperature at which the normal stress in the aluminium bar will
be equal to -75MPa.
(b) The corresponding exact length of the aluminium bar.

Q21. Solve above Problem and Determine:


(a) The compressive force in the bars shown after a temperature rise of
280C
(b) The corresponding change in length of the bronze bar.
Q22. A plane element is subjected to stresses as shown in fig. determine: Principal
stresses, Maximum shear stress and their planes using Mohr’s Circle, sketch the
planes determined.

Q23. At point in a strained material there is tensile stress of 80 N/mm2 upon a


horizontal plane and a compressive stress of 40 N/mm2 upon a vertical plane.
There is also a shear stress of 48 N/mm2 upon each of these planes. Determine
the plane of maximum shear stress at the point. Also determine the resultant
stress on the planes of maximum shear stress using Mohr’s Circle approach.

Q24. A strain gauge rosette has the axes of the three gauges OA, OB and OC at 1200C
to each other. The observed strains are: eA=600 micron , eB=-450 micron
eC= 100 micron. Determine the principal stress. Given E= 2x10 N/mm2 and

µ = 0.3
Q25. A bar of varying cross section is hanging vertically. A load of 16kg is applied at
its lower end which has an area of 10cm2. The area of the bar varies in such a
way that the bar has same stress developed at all sections under the applied load
and its own weight. If the length of bar is 8m, find:(a) Area at the larger end ,(b)
Area at mid length, and (c) extension of the bar. Take E=200GN/m2 and ρ=7800
kg/m3.
Q26. A bar of length 25 cm has varying cross section. It carries a load of 14 kN. Find
the extension if the cross-section is given by (6+x2/100) cm2 where x is the
distance from one end in cm. Take E=200 GPa (Neglect weight of bar).

Q27. A rigid beam is suspended from three rods having 300 mm spacing between the
adjacent rods. The outer rods are 1 m long but the middle rod is made 0.5 mm
shorter than the outer two rods and assembled with initial stress. Determine the
stresses in the rods. The cross sectional area of each rod is 2 cm2 and E=200GPa.
