Module Description

The module will focus on developing legal drafting skills of students to formulate cogent
arguments for their clients’ positions and to provide legal support for such positions. Legal
drafting is central to professional practice hence the knowledge will be imparted in two modules.
In the present module, students will learn about the drafting of plaints, written statements,
drafting contracts and agreements and other legal instruments.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, students will able to:

 Understand the subtleties of different types of legal briefs and memos;


 Prepare pliants according to the professional conventions;
 Prepare contracts and understand the importance of the different boilerplate provisions in a
contract;
 Understand how to construct substantive provisions in a contract for clarity and consistent
interpretation;
 Develop the skills to examine legal drafts and advise improvements;
 Analyzing judgements and statues to prepare effective memos and briefs;
 Learn and practice the art of pleading;
 Learn the basic rules of legal writing.

Indicative Content :
 Contract drafting.
 Lease drafting.
 Memo and briefs drafting;
 Plaint drafting;
 Drafting legal notices and their replies;
 Letter drafting;
 Agreement drafting;
 Caselaw analysis;
 Constructing advice for clients.

Delivery :
A variety of teaching approaches are used, including lectures, seminars, case analysis, teamwork
and extensive use of the Internet for guided research.

Assessment : The formal assessment of this module will be conducted through the following
table:
