Refer to Figure 6.1in textbook.

Consider the formula to determine the speed of EM radiation in a vacuum.

cf (1)
Where,
c 3 108 m/s is the speed of EM radiation in a vacuum
 is the wavelength in meters
f is the frequency in hertz (Hz) or cycles per second

8 2
Substitute 3 10 m/s for c and 3 10 m for  in equation (1)
 
3 108 m/s  3 102 m  f
Rearrange the equation.
3  108 m/s
f 
3  102 m
 1010 Hz

The oscillating nature of EM radiation results in different interpretation of EM radiation.

Figure 6.1 shows the range of categorized EM radiation from very low frequency to very
high frequency.

From Figure 6.1, the radiation lies in the microwave band since the frequency limit
9 12
between 10 Hz and 10 Hz represent the microwave band.

10
Therefore, the frequency of 3-cm wavelength EM radiation is 10 Hz . This EM
radiation represent the microwave band .
