TWO PHASE FLUIDS

• We may encounter two-phase flow in every activities

• Flow of carbonated water pouring out of a bottle
• Ocean waves carrying oxygen
• Action of the windshield wiper to removes rain drops

• Effort is made for formulate two-flow aspect by analytical means but are based
on experimental data and hence are in the form of correlations
Refers to the flow of a liquid Mathematical analysis of
and a gas or vapor such as the two-phase flow where the
flow of water and steam, two-phase mixture is
DEFINITIONS water and air, etc. treated as a pseudo
single-phase

• Two-phase flow Mathematical analysis of two-phase where phases are treated

separately. Such treatment requires consideration of mass,
• Two-phase mixture momentum and energy transfer between the phases. This model
provides more information but also requires more experimentally
• Two-fluid model based constitutive equations than a two phase mixture model

• Multifluid flow
Refers to such cases as the
• Multi-phase flow flow of water droplets in
bulk steam, surrounded by Refers to the flow of
a film of flowing water several phases such as
steam, ice, and water

TWO-PHASE FLOW IN PIPES

• Static pressure gradient

• Pressure gradient due to acceleration
• Pressure gradient due to friction: is similar
to friction pressure drop for single-phase
flow

We assume a case where only

water/vapor is flowing in the same
pipe at the same mass flow rate as the
mixture of the water and steam

LOCKHART-
MARTINELLI
PROBLEM 1

• A cryogenic piping system is composed of a 200 ft long (horizontal) NPS 6

(0.250” wall thickness) pipe. Calculate the pressure drop in two-phase flow,
considering an inlet pressure of 300 psia, liquid viscosity of 0.2 cP and vapor
viscosity of 0.012 cP. The liquid flowrate is 12 ft3/mib and the vapor flow rate
is 200 ft3/min. The liquid and vapor densities are 50 and 0.8 lb/ft3
respectively at the operating temperature.

PROBLEM 2

• Estimate the pressure drop in a 4 inches Sch 40 static mixer unit carrying
50000 lb/h water and 5000 lb/h air at 60ºF. Inlet pressure 100 psig.
