Weight and Balance Guide
COMPLIANCE: Immediate
Requirements
Weight and balance is a high relevance subject when assuring the airworthiness of
an aircraft, demanding from each mechanic or repairman to be fully aware of its
responsibility. This guide aims to provide the pilot with current and accurate
information for the actual weight of the aircraft and the location of the center of
gravity.
The pilot in command has the responsibility to know the weight of the load,
CG, maximum allowable weight, and CG limits of the aircraft.
The weight and balance report must include an equipment list showing weights and
moment arms of all required and optional items of equipment included in the
certificated empty weight.
When an aircraft has undergone extensive repair or major alteration, it should be
reweighted and a new weight and balance record started. The A&P mechanic or
the repairman responsible for the work must provide the pilot with current and
accurate aircraft weight information along with the location of the new EWCG.
The aircraft should be clean inside and out, with special attention paid to the bilge
area to be sure no water or debris is trapped there, and the outside of the aircraft
should be as free as possible of all mud and dirt.
Equipment List
All of the required equipment must be properly installed, and there should be no
equipment installed that is not included in the Basic Weight Equipment List. If
such equipment is installed, the weight and balance record must be corrected to
indicate it.
Ballast
All required permanent ballast must be properly secured in place and all temporary
ballast must be removed.
Oil
The engine must be 8 (Quarter) corresponding oil reservoir capacity.
Other Fluids
The hydraulic fluid reservoir required for normal operation of the aircraft should be
full.
When an aircraft is weighted, it must be in its level flight attitude so that all of the
components will be at their correct distance from the datum. The attitude angle in
the longitudinal axis must be checked by placing the digital level to 24 inches from
the edge of the air intake, the value of the angle should be 1.7 degrees as shown
in Figure 1. To locate the aircraft attitude in lateral axis must be adjusted by placing
a straight rod to 12 inch canopy opening handle and place in this level support the
indication should be 0 degrees. Figure 2 and 3.
Note: Use additional supports to achieve the angles on the axes described
above, provided that the use of these media does not affect the value
of the weight in the scales.
Weighting Aircraft
1. Once the aircraft is over scales give enough time for readings to stabilize,
2. Take notes of the readings.
3. Repeat procedure until the three scales have been rotated clockwise
direction. At the end, every scale should have been placed on each location.
4. The final weight for each location is the average of the measures taken.
Safety Considerations
Special precautions must be taken when weighting the aircraft. Enough space
should be warrantied for the proper aircraft placement. The measures should be
taken in a closed hangar to avoid reading deviations.
CG Limits
Operational CG Range
NOTE: For more information about weight and balance of the airplane, please
refer to the Aircraft Maintenance Manual chapter 8.
