In a Nutshell
1. Define ‘flood routing’. What are the usual assumptions made in routing a flood in a reservoir?
Flood routing is the method of determining the stage of the reservoir, the outflow
hydrograph storage volume corresponding to a known inflow hydrograph into the
reservoir; this is called the routing of the reservoir. In flood routing, the goal is to
evaluate the relationship as a function of time between the inflow, the outflow and the
storage.
The first assumption is the rainfall rate on the watershed that the 50-year occurrence is
called. All rainfall is dependent on rain events observed and all that information is taken
and plotted on a graph. This data point cloud is then mathematically evaluated to
generate the data cloud's best fit curve. For design hydrology, the best fit line is then
used when building the reservoir. The reservoir is built to hold the storm for 50 years
and flow the storm for 100 years or higher.
There is then the assumption of the time of compilation. That is the amount of time it
takes to find it down to the exit point for the first drop of rain. Since the precipitation
runs over all kinds of varied terrain, time is also the best curve to match data points.
2. Explain clearly the I.S.D. curves method of reservoir flood routing. What are the factors to be
considered in choosing the routing period?

When starting the routing period all the terms on the left side of equation are known
and the value of the right-side terms is found out. Corresponding to the oxygen and
other are read from the paragraph, which become the initial values for the next routing
period and so on, which is called the ISD method. There are other factors that needs a
consideration such as total length of reach, location of tributaries, and roads or it can be
other structures upstream that requires individual routings.
