Casting You will need:

• A camera—a cheap

shadows
disposable or a phone
• Some willing models
• Your imagination
• Lots of bright
sunshine

View the world from some strange

angles using shadows made by the sun,
and then capture them on camera.

What’s the
science?
Shadows occur when an object blocks the
path of light rays. The amount of light that
is blocked depends on whether the object is
solid or transparent (see-through). Solid
objects cast the strongest shadows because
most of the light rays are reflected back from
the object’s surface, creating a dark shadow.
Transparent items, such as glass bottles, let
almost all the light through. They still cast a
blurry shadow, mainly around the edges of
the object.

Special effects
Hand shadows against a wall
are great, but why not use
your whole body to create
some really strange shadow
effects? You could even base
a story around your
shadow photos.
