1 LOOKING BACK
Jose Rizal lived in the 19th-century. This is during the time of Spanish Colonization. The
abuse of the Spaniards gave an opportunity to Rizal to become a patriot. During his
childhood, GOMBURZA was executed, this was considered as the turning point for
Rizal's nationalism. Let us try if you still remember your history.
Please write three interesting things that you remember during the Spanish era.
How did you learn about them?
1. The First Catholic Mass in the Philippines held on March 31, 1521, Easter Sunday.
2. Cry of Pugadlawin, where Andres Bonifacio and his men tore their cedulas as a sign
of protest and determination to rise against the Spaniards.
3. Treaty of Paris, which was signed in December 1898 to end the Spanish–American
War and selling the Philippines to the United States.
I learned these three events through Araling Panlipunan subjects during high school
and Readings in Philippine History class during first-year college.
