INTERNET UPGRADE FOR DENTAL4WINDOWS

1. OVERVIEW
Internet is a new upgrade system that will allow you to check and download new updates from our Internet
server.

If new updates are found, then you can download and perform the upgrade without the need to use the
existing upgrade CD that arrives by mail.

The advantage for you is:

 New updates will be immediately available to internet upgrade users as soon as each has been piloted.
This ensures you are always on the latest build.
 There is no need to wait for upgrades to arrive by mail
 There is no need to worry about upgrade CDs being lost or damaged

The following diagram gives an overview of how the internet upgrade system works:

As you can see from the diagram the functions performed on each computer type are:

Dental4windows Server
 'Download and Launch Upgrade' can only be performed on the Server
 You can also elect to perform a 'Check for Updates' and you will then be presented with the option to
'Download and Launch Upgrade'

 Dental4windows Client
 On your client computers the only action that is allowed is 'Check for Updates'. This will be done
automatically from within Dental4Windows after a pre-set number of days or manually by selecting
"Help | Check for Updates".
 If new updates are found, then you will be directed to perform the 'Download and Launch Upgrade'
from your Server.

2. PREREQUISITES
1. You must be on the build 3376 or higher.

2. You should already be on the major version of Dental4Windows that the new updates are proposed for.
For example: if the new updates are proposed for v12.0 and you are on v11.0, then you can't use
internet upgrade. You will be required to use a CD to upgrade to v12.0 first.

3. Your Computer Identification Number (i.e. registration numbers) should exist in our Support database.
For example: if you don't have to regularly ring for a registration code during the current upgrade then
your Computer Identification Number is more than likely in our Support database.

4. Your Dental4Windows client computers should already be using our "Auto Client Upgrade" (ACU)
method to perform the upgrade (i.e. you should not need to take the CD around to each computer).

5. On your Dental4Windows server computer, you will require the ability to download files over the
Internet on port 80.
For example: if you can download a file from your web browser then this would indicate that you should
meet this requirement.

6. Your SMS Surgery Code must be entered into Dental4Windows (Location Setup => General Settings
=> SMS Settings => SMS Surgery Code

4. INSTRUCTIONS
The usual upgrade of Dental4Windows starts on the Server, but the Internet Upgrade is slightly different as it
starts on the client computers by performing the 'Check for Updates'.

4.1. Check for Updates on Dental4Windows Client

Check for Updates
1. There are two ways to start the 'Check for Updates':- Automatically or Manually:
Automatic
a) If the 'Check for Updates' is triggered
automatically you will see a prompt to
perform the check, select Yes.

Manual
a) Click 'Help | Check for Updates' when
starting manually.

2. Select ‘Next’ at the

“Welcome” screen.

3. Internet Upgrade will connect to the Update server and check if new updates are available.

4. Internet Upgrade will connect to the database and verify

that you have a current maintenance contract and are
entitled to download the new updates package.

5. Depending on the result of

the ‘check for new updates’,
you will end up at either of
the following:
 There are no new
updates and therefore
the upgrade process is
complete.

or

 New updates exist, but

the first step is to go to
your Server and
download the new
update package and
then perform the
upgrade there first.

Click 'Update Info' if

you like to read about
the new updates.

4.2. Download and/or Upgrade on Dental4Windows Server

1. You can access Internet Upgrade from three(3) areas:

Automatic
a) If the 'Check for Updates' is triggered
automatically you will see a prompt to perform the
check, select Yes.

Manual
b) Click 'Help | Check for Updates' when starting
manually.

c) Select “Internet Upgrade (Check or Download Updates)” from Start | All Programs | Centaur
Software | Dental 4 Windows SQL

If a stoppage occurs in the following screen, to start again, use

either “Help | Check for Updates” or the “shortcut” (i.e.. 1.b or 1.c)

2. Select ‘Next’ at the

“Welcome” screen.

3. Internet Upgrade will connect to the update server and check if any new updates are available.

4. If the Internet Upgrade process detects that you are resuming from a previous Internet Upgrade
operation (for the same 'new update package'), then you will see either of the following screens:

a) Previous Download is Complete and/or Unknown Errors after Download

 Click 'Yes' and you will end up at step 13

 Click 'No' and you will end up at the "Update Available" screen in step 6

or
b) Previous Download was Incomplete and/or Unknown Errors before Download

 Click 'OK' and you will end up at the "Updates are Available" screen in step 6

5. Internet Upgrade will connect to the

database and verify that you have a
current maintenance contract and are
entitled to download the update.

6. Depending on the result
of the ‘check for new
update’ you will end up
at either of the following
screens:

 There are no new

updates; therefore
the upgrade process
is complete.

or
 Updates are available,
select a download
option.

Click 'Update Info' if

you like to read about
the new updates.

7. At the “Updates are Available” screen the following options exist:

Download Only You would select this option if you are NOT planning to do the
actual upgrade in one step.
For Example
1. This option allows you to download the new updates on
the first night.
2. On the 2nd night, run internet upgrade again and it will
detect that the new updates were downloaded and allow
you to immediately start the upgrade.
Download and Select this option if you are planning to download and upgrade
Upgrade in the one night.

You will be asked if you would like to continue after the

download has completed.
Important Note
You can continue to use Dental4Windows until the download
has been completed.

8. If you selected ‘Download Only’,

you will see the message to the
right.

9. The download will begin and you

should see the “Downloading
Files” screen.

10. If you see the “Download Error” screen,
don’t panic, simply click ‘Retry’.

In some cases you may need to click

‘Retry’ around 3 – 4 times.

If this screen appears more than 4 times,

click Cancel and call Centaur Software
on 61 02 9213 5000 / 1300 855 312
(AUS Only).

Errors at this screen usually indicate

problems with Internet connectivity
at your end and therefore it is highly
likely that we will need to work with
your computer technician to resolve
this issue.

11. If you selected ' Download and Upgrade'

then you should see the message to the
right once the files have completely
downloaded.

Select 'Yes' if you would like to do the

upgrade now.

12. If you are resuming from previous

internet upgrade operation (for
this 'new update package'), then
you may see the screen to the
right.

13. You will now see the normal 'Welcome to

Upgrade Manager 4.1' screen

Click 'Next' and follow the onscreen

instructions to complete the upgrade.

 14. At the ‘Database Validation’ screen, make a selection and click on the Next button to continue.

15. The 'Upgrade Manager. Module 1. Database Upgrade' screen may appear, click on the Upgrade
button if it appears.

16. A series of black DOS screens may appear (e.g. dbupgrad). Let this proceed, unless errors occur.
 The upgrade utility should now be upgrading the database file. Let this proceed, unless errors occur.
 On major upgrades it may appear that the upgrade process has stalled. Understand that this stage can
take a while. If you fear that it has failed, don’t restart your computer or cancel the process, call Centaur
Software so we can look at the situation first.
 After that file components will be automatically installed. Let this proceed, unless errors occur.

17. When the upgrade is complete the ‘Finish’ screen will appear, click Ok and the following items should
open:

4.3. Upgrade on 'Dental4Windows' Client

1. After the upgrade has completed on the Server (i.e. after Step 17), on each
Dental4Windows client computer click on the normal icon you use and click Ok to
the build mismatch and the upgrade will start.

2. At the ‘Welcome’ screen, ensure that Complete is selected and click on the Next button to continue.

3. When the upgrade is complete the ‘Finish’ screen will appear, click Ok.

4. Open Dental4Windows using the icon you normally use (if it didn’t open automatically):
 Continue onto the next client computer and follow the same process until all computers are finished.
