INFORMED ASSESSMENT OF CH#1

1) Label the layers of earth

Inner core
Outer core
Mantle

crust

2) List any two ways/methods scientists have used to gather information about the Earth’s
interior.
By studying the condition of earth after earthquakes and how it affects the layers of earth by
vibrations. And by studying the temperature of the earth layers

Correct the false statements.

a) Convection currents are formed in the sea.

Convection currents are formed in the mantle.

b) The Earth’s core is broken into pieces called plates. (true)

c) The Continental Drift Theory states that the plates do not move

The Continental Drift Theory states that the plates are constantly moving..

d) The temperature of the interior of the Earth is much cooler as compared to the area
nearer the surface.

The temperature of the interior of the Earth is higher as compared to the area nearer the
surface.

Differentiate between the following:

a) Continental and Oceanic Crust
The oceanic plates are made up of rocks that are not too old and the continental plates are
made up of older rocks.

b) Inner and Outer Core

Inner core is made up of entirely iron
Outer core is made up of nickle, iron, alloy.

Define convection currents

The earth gets very hot as it gets nearer to its core. The mantle is thus heated up as it is right
next to the core. As a result convection current is formed in the mantle. These currents flow from
the lower part of the mantle and move upwards.
